Dion McGrath named Executive Director of APAS

The Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan is set to officially welcome their new Executive Director on Monday, September 19th. 

Dion McGrath moves into the role as General Manager Duane Haave retired in late August.

President Ian Boxall says Dion's wealth of experience will make him a great fit for the organization. 

McGrath has worked in various executive roles in the public sector, to previously serving as the CEO of Southeast College in Weyburn and working with his partner to create a 
digital marketing company called Above the Fold.

StatCan canola estimate falls to 19.1 million tonnes

Statistics Canada released its August crop production estimate on Wednesday.

In 2022, Canadian farmers are projected to produce more wheat, canola, barley, oats, soybeans and corn for grain than they did in 2021, according to the most recent yield model estimates using satellite imagery and agroclimatic data.

SSGA looking at the next steps in developing a packing plant

The Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association says it will begin laying the groundwork to attract investors in a provincial beef packing plant.

This following the release of a recent study commissioned by the SSGA and the Ministry of Agriculture focusing on the  "Opportunities and Challenges for Growing Saskatchewan's Beef Processing Sector".

Feeling a sense of urgency to get crops off the fields

As farmers rush to get their crops off the field before the cold weather sets in, there is optimism that this will be a good year for producers. 

Louis Courcelles with Dale Air Services near Morris says overall, everything looks favourable for farmers. 

"The prices are good, the crop is good, but the inputs have never been higher,” he notes. 

With a greater risk, Courcelles is hoping this will translate into a greater reward for farmers. 

Courcelles reflects on the hot, dry conditions last year, and then a lot of rain this year.
