Mineral content an important part of feed for cattle

Feed is an important part of raising cattle, and making sure you know what's going into that feed can help out with health.

While the uninitiated might think that it's as simple as getting straw and hay to cattle, the balance of what's in that meal can be very important.

When it comes to feeding, mineral content is an aspect that ranchers are encouraged to watch out for, as specific minerals have effects that can be the difference between a healthy and unhealthy herd.

Researchers getting a better read on canola-destroying fungus

Canola generates about one-quarter of all farm crop receipts in Canada, so any problem is a serious threat for producers.

That includes blackleg, a fungus that's spread widely over Western Canada, and can cause serious damage to crops.

Recently, researchers completed the first large-scale resequencing of the blackleg pathogen in the world. This resequencing helps them get a good understanding of Canadian populations of blackleg.

Kochia project finding tough, resistant weeds across the prairies

A group of researchers is looking at how best to make a dent in a resistant weed population that's a concern for prairie farmers.

Kochia is a weed that has exploded with herbicide resistance, often times not being affected by glyphosate and group 2 herbicides such as dicamba.

That's why researchers are looking at what the best method is to get rid of that weed before they become a serious adversary for farmers.

Shannon Chant, a Crops Extension Specialist with the Ministry of Agriculture, details the three practices they studied during their research.

The process can vary widely based on the field it's being done on, including the cost and labour needed to do so

Range Management Extension specialist Kerry Cochrane explains just what land rejuvenation looks to achieve.

CFIB says federal government's plan to cut fertilizer emissions must remain voluntary

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business says the federal government’s plan to cut fertilizer emissions by 30% by 2030 must remain voluntary for Canadian agri-businesses.

According to a recent CFIB survey, nearly three-quarters (72%) of farmers said the yield of their crops and overall food production will be reduced if the federal government required them to reduce their use of nitrogen fertilizer.

The federal government is currently conducting consultations on its plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from nitrogen fertilizer by 30% below 2020 levels by 2030.
