Grande Prairie RCMP make arrest after significant break and enter and arson

On Aug. 29, 2024, Grande Prairie RCMP received a complaint of a break in enter in progress into a Hangar located on Range Road 63 near Grande Prairie. Upon arrival, a suspect saw police and attempted to steal a snowmobile, when not successful, he attempted to run but was quickly arrested.   As police were arresting the male, the hangar burst into flames which ignited several volatile accelerants inside that caused significant damage. The fire was held under control and eventually put out by local Fire Dept.

Grande Prairie Salvation Army urgently calls for community support ahead of September 12 food bank drive

The Grande Prairie Salvation Army is gearing up for its annual Food Bank Drive on September 12, and the need in the community has never been greater. According to Captain Peter Kim, the demand for food assistance has continued to grow exponentially, with one in five residents currently relying on the food bank. “We are in desperate need of food this year, more than any other year,” said Captain Kim. “People have to wait a month just to pick up their hampers.” 

Grande Prairie McDonald’s manager Jayson Deato receives prestigious Ray Kroc Award

McDonald’s Canada is proud to announce that Jayson Deato, manager of the McDonald’s restaurant in Grande Prairie, has been honored with a prestigious Ray Kroc Award. This global recognition is awarded to only the top one percent of McDonald’s restaurant managers worldwide and includes a cash prize and a trophy. Jayson began his career at McDonald’s 21 years ago in the Philippines as a crew member working on the grill and has been the restaurant manager in Grande Prairie since 2014.

House from My Girl movie now offering many moms hope

'Like being in prison': Via Rail passenger says people stranded without food, water

A tourist visiting Canada is questioning the safety of Via Rail after he says his phone was snatched from him by an employee when he was documenting a train delay that left passengers stranded as they ran out of food, water and working toilets.

Chip Malt was in Quebec over the long weekend to celebrate his father's 70th birthday in the province's capital, and said he boarded a Via Rail train from Montreal to Quebec City on Saturday.

Not everybody gets "turned on" over management concepts, but most of us can profit from such information at home or church or school. Even as individuals we may find some of these principles coming in handy.

If organizations are not to become stagnant, they must renew themselves—stay continually fresh. Some years back I found some excellent guidelines for this shared by John W. Gardner in a Harper's article entitled "How to Prevent Organizational Dry Rot." I've condensed some of his thoughts here.

Cash-strapped parents seek back-to-school deals as years of inflation take a toll

When August rolled around, April Hicke realized the $100 she typically gives her 13-year-old son to update his wardrobe in time for school to start was no longer enough.

"Even on the sale racks, a pair of sweatpants at SportChek, they're still $25 a pair. You used to be able to go and buy a pair of sweatpants for $10," said the Calgary-based mother of two. "I am shocked at the (price) increase of kids' clothes."

Federal health spending has outpaced provinces, analysis shows

Despite castigation from provincial premiers over lagging federal contributions to health spending, an analysis of 20 years of health funding data shows that federal transfers have mostly outpaced increases to provincial health budgets. 

In 2023, federal health transfers amounted to $47.1 billion, a 212 per cent increase over 2005, when the transfers were $15.1 billion. Total spending by all 10 provinces grew in that time to $221.9 billion up from $86.2 billion, an increase of 158 per cent.
