AJHL "disappointed but not surprised" at announcement from departing teams

With the BCHL confirming that five Alberta teams have officially joined the league, the AJHL have released a statement of their own.

This afternoon (Feb. 1), the BCHL and the five Alberta teams released statements to confirm the Alberta teams had signed agreements to officially join the BCHL.

CFIA approves methane-reducing feed ingredient for cattle

The Canadian Cattle Association and National Cattle Feeders’ Association have been strong advocates for new innovations such as methane-reducing feed ingredients to be available in Canada, as they are in other countries.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency this week announced the approval of a new livestock feed ingredient that reduces methane emissions from cattle. 

Alberta Grains elects inaugural Board of Directors


Alberta Grains held its Annual General Meeting yesterday as part of the CrossRoads Crop Conference in Edmonton.

Alberta Grains was formed with the amalgamation of Alberta Wheat and Alberta Barley in August 2023.

The new group formally electing its inaugural board of directors and delegates with Tara Sawyer serving as board chair, Scott Jespersen as first vice-chair, and Devin Hartzler as second vice-chair.... all three served on the interim board of directors.

Sawyer says she's honoured to serve as the first chair for Alberta Grains.

The province is set to begin largest water sharing negotiations in history

 Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's latest drought assessment shows 70 per cent of Canada is classified as being abnormally dry or in moderate to exceptional drought,  including 81 per cent of the country’s agricultural landscape.

Alberta’s Drought Command Team will begin work with major water licence holders to strike water-sharing agreements to mitigate the risk of drought. 

The concern is that this winter, snowpack is below average, rivers are at record low levels and multiple reservoirs remain well below capacity.

UPDATE: Multi-vehicle collision, fatality, Highway 668 near RR 61

UPDATE:  Grande Prairie RCMP would like to advise the public that Highway 668, near Range Road 61, has now reopened for travel. 

The circumstances surrounding the collision are still under investigation, but preliminary findings suggest that a pickup truck was rear ended by a semi-truck while they were both travelling Eastbound on Highway 668.  As a result of the collision, the diver of the pickup truck, a 51-year-old Grande Prairie resident, was declared deceased at the scene.

Alberta RCMP wish to extend their condolences to the loved ones of the deceased.

Heroic pastor dies shielding sons from devastating fire

 A GoFundMe account has been set up for a pastor in Ohio who died while trying to save his family from a house fire. 

Just over a week ago, Mark Robinette awoke to find that his Pickaway County house was on fire. 

"Mark was able to get Andrea and two children who were sleeping upstairs out of the house to safety, but when he tried to rescue the other two children who were still in their bedrooms upstairs, they all perished in the fire," said his brother, Paul Robinett on Facebook.

'He was my hero,' pastor saves family from dog attack

A woman from Indiana is honouring her husband after he stepped in front of a pair of pit bulls to prevent her and her grandaughter from being attacked.

Betty Mundine says her husband of almost 50 years helped save her life after pit bulls came into their yard. William Mundine, an 85-year-old pastor saw the dogs and immediately went to shoo them away from his wife when things took a turn. 

William, who led Faith Tabernacle Apostolic Church, tried to simply get the dogs off his yard but they attacked him and ended up mauling him to death. 

Canada joins Efficient Fertilizer Consortium as part of its goals to reduce GHG emissions

Canada has signed on as a founding member of the Efficient Fertilizer Consortium (EFC). 

The EFC funds research to advance enhanced efficiency and novel fertilizer products  and practices that help farmers produce crops while reducing environmental impacts. 

Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay says Canada is committing approximately  $1.3 million to the EFC over the next four years.
