Farmers should think about the impact soil compaction and wheel tracks have on the crop


Wheel tracks in a field can lead to soil compaction and depending on the depth can have a key impact on a crops yield potential.

Marla Riekman. a soil management specialist with Manitoba Agriculture, says soil compaction is more of an issue when your soil is moist and near capacity:

"Your soils are lubricated, the water that's in the soil can allow that soil to kind of move around. It's reduced in shear strength and now those big pores are filled with air. They've been allowed to drain, they can be crushed. The small pores are water-filled, they hold in place."

Fortis Alberta warns of a shocking new way that copper is being stolen

It appears as though no copper is safe from being looted.

According to a Facebook post by Fortis Alberta, copper from power poles has recently become targeted by thieves. 

"If you see a damaged power pole, a power line on the ground or other signs of damage to our equipment, immediately contact your electric utility - FortisAlberta can be reached at 310-WIRE (9473) - citing the location," Fortis stated in the Facebook post.

But, they do strongly suggest staying at least ten metres from all downed powerlines, in case they are still energized.

EXTREME COLD WARNING issued for the Peace Country

An extreme cold warning is in effect for the Peace Country. 

A long period of extreme cold temperatures and wind chills from now until Sunday.

Temperatures will drop to near minus 30 degrees Celsius tonight with wind chills near minus 40.

Over the weekend, morning temperatures will reach minus 40 degrees Celsius in many areas. Wind chills will approach minus 50.

Grande North Winter Festival activities moved INDOORS due to inclement weather

The City is updating this weekend’s Grande North Winter Festival event, happening January 12 to 14, to only having activities at Bonnetts Energy Centre due to inclement weather.

Outdoor activities scheduled for Bonnetts Energy Centre, Montrose Cultural Centre and Muskoseepi Park as part of the Grande North Winter Festival event have been cancelled.

2023 another successful highway construction season in the Peace Country

Hundreds of road and bridge projects completed in 2023 will reduce traffic congestion and enhance travel on Alberta’s busiest roads.

Last year, Alberta’s government invested $1.13 billion in 250 projects, including two major projects here in the Peace Region.

Considerable progress was made on the Highway 40 Twinning Project (total estimated investment $228 million).

Planned police operation in Sexsmith results in arrest of wanted male

On Jan. 4, 2024, members of the Western Alberta District (WAD) Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) and the RCMP Emergency Response Team conducted a planned police operation at a residence on 93 Street, in Sexsmith, related to a male wanted under multiple arrest warrants.

As a result of the investigation, Malcolm Testawits (39), a resident of Duncan’s First Nation, Alta., was arrested on more than 20 Criminal Code warrants, including:

UPDATE: Physician coverage found for Fairview Health Complex

UPDATE: 

Physician coverage has been found for the emergency department (ED) at the Fairview Health Complex as of 7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 12. The emergency department will be fully open and available to area residents in need of urgent care at this time.

The previous Public Service Announcement issued Jan. 10 stated that the Fairview Health Complex would be temporarily without on-site physician coverage from 7 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 11 to 7 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13. This is now partially rescinded.
