'New normal': Jasper wildfire evacuees can start returning to townsite on Friday

The 5,000 residents of Jasper, Alta., chased out of their homes three weeks ago ahead of a devastating wildfire, can go home Friday.

Officials said essential services have been restored to the point where they can allow a blanket re-entry.

However, utility services could still be hit and miss. Some homes may look fine on the outside but will have sustained heavy smoke or water damage on the inside. Other homes may be fenced off as public safety hazards.

Northwestern Polytechnic and Regional EMS Foundation make the most of emerging opportunity

Northwestern Polytechnic will be receiving a lifesaving $43,889.99 gift from the Regional EMS Foundation that will facilitate health professional training for years to come.

As the post-secondary continues to progress development a new Emergency Medical Responder certificate, learning community members are welcoming the news of a timely and impactful donation. The funding will facilitate the purchase of specialized training equipment at the polytechnic’s Health Education Centre, which is conveniently located within the state-of-the-art Grande Prairie Regional Hospital.

New water source wells being drilled near Hythe

Drilling of new water source wells will continue in the Hamlet of Hythe this week.

Residents can expect to hear an increase in noise due to drilling at three different locations. Near the old pool in Hythe, near the Campground location north of the physical camp stalls, and near the Wellhouse One Water Treatment Plant location.

Drilling will begin near the pool today for 3-4 days before moving onto the next location.

Contractors will be working 7 days/week. 

Lane reduction at 132 Avenue CN rail crossing for rail signal upgrades

The City of Grande Prairie is notifying the community about upcoming work at the 132 Avenue CN rail crossing. CN will be conducting essential infrastructure upgrades, leading to a temporary lane reduction.

The work begins on Wednesday, August 14 and is expected to last one day, weather depending.

The Canadian beef industry is taking a look at what it's done and how it can move forward as a status update on its 2020-2024 National Beef Strategy.

The status update covers the last two years of the strategy, covering June 2022 through June 2024.

Grande Prairie RCMP request public assistance in identifying suspect

On August 10, 2024 at approximately 8:20p.m., Grande Prairie RCMP responded to a report, in the South Avondale area of the city, involving an unknown male who attempted to assault an individual with an axe and subsequently caused damaged to their property. Fortunately, no one was injured in the attack.

Alberta sees relief with thunderstorms, lower temperatures in recent crop report

Alberta is seeing some good conditions in the lead-up to harvest season, as reported by the province's most recent crop report.

In that, the province details that it received widespread thunderstorms which brought much-needed moisture across the province. The storms also helped lower temperatures to the mid to high 20s across all regions.

The rainfall provided relief for stressed crops that have gone through prolonged periods of high temperatures.

An unexpected worship performance at Rolling Hills Community Church in Franklin, Tennessee left the congregation in awe Sunday. 

Country music superstar, eight-time Grammy Award winner and multi-platinum singer, Carrie Underwood joined the worship band and sang alongside the team, including a solo during 'Goodness of God.'
