Crop would be eligible for biofuel tax credit under recent budget proposals in Congress

U.S. President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” could contain some beautiful news for Canada’s canola growers.

The U.S. House of Representatives’ ways and means committee has released its draft proposals for the U.S. budget reconciliation bill.

The proposals include provisions to amend the controversial 45Z clean fuel production tax credit so that canola oil-based biodiesel and renewable diesel would be eligible for the credit.

Producer groups come together to help fund ag research facilities at U of S

Construction is underway at the University of Saskatchewan that will see critical facility improvements within the College of Agriculture and Bioresources.

Two new facilities are being built - the Harrington Plant Growth Facility and the Soil Science Field Facility - while a portion of the Crop Science Field Lab is being renovated to provide additional workspace for the Crop Development Centre. 

Stompede activities kick off TOMORROW with annual parade

This year’s Grande Prairie Stompede runs from May 28 to June 1.

The annual event will kick off tomorrow with a community favorite...the Stompede Parade.

The parade will start at 12 noon from Hillside School on 95 street, go west on 100 Ave, and turn onto 130 street into Muskoseepi Park.

Two families displaced after Northgate townhouse fire

At approximately 09:00 on Thursday, May 22, 2025, the Grande Prairie Fire Department responded to a fire at a two-story townhouse in the Northgate area. Upon arrival, crews observed flames spreading up the rear of the home and into the attic.

Three GPFD crews initiated exterior fire suppression before entering multiple units to check for fire extension in the attic and ensure all residents had evacuated safely. While all occupants made it out, two individuals were assessed on scene by EMS for smoke inhalation.

Pakistan working towards ending child marriage through law

On Monday this week, Pakistan's parliament passed an important bill that will take steps toward ending child marriages. 

On May 16, Sharmila Faruqui of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) was the one to introduce the bill. To her delight, the House members unanimously approved it. 

The next step was on Monday when PPP Sen. Sherry Rehman introduced the bill to the Senate. They passed it as well but not everyone was happy about it, as Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) of the Islamist party walked out. 

Breanna Nix to make Grand Ole Opry debut following American Idol success

It's been less than a week since Breanna Nix placed third in American Idol, and already doors are opening for her to share her faith on a bigger stage.

The Christian country singer announced Thursday that she will be performing at the Grand Ole Opry on June 5, 2025. 

"I’m beyond overjoyed," said Nix. "This moment has been on my bucket list for years, and getting to finally check it off feels surreal."

This is the first big performance for Nix since the show ended last Sunday.  

Western premiers agree to develop new economic corridors, call for federal support

Canada's western premiers say they've agreed to identify, plan and develop new economic corridors to connect provincial resources to international markets.

A joint statement issued Thursday says doing so would boost Canada's market access in Asia and Europe while the country fights a trade war with the United States and China.

Canada Post union calls for halt to overtime as deadline passes with no agreement

The union representing about 55,000 Canada Post employees has called for a countrywide halt to overtime work, saying its negotiators will continue to review the latest contract offers from the mail carrier.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers said late Thursday that members were being told to refuse any work beyond eight hours in a day and 40 hours in a week.
