Family mourns loss of murdered 13-year-old son, who 'reflected the bright light of Jesus'

A whole community gathered this past Sunday to mourn the loss of a 'budding preacher,' a teenage boy who was murdered after trying to sell his camera. 

Matthiew Stavkovy, the fourth child in a family of six children, was fatally shot recently when he and his sister went to a park to meet up with someone wanting to buy their camera. The mobile site OfferUp was how the connection was initially made.

I grew up in the heyday of radio. (Fact is, I didn't even see a television set until I was a teenager.) If we got our homework done, we could listen to various weeknight radio shows. Remember that spooky line the announcer always gave just before The Shadow came on: "Who knows what evil l-l-lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!" Then there would be a blood-curdling laugh, which faded away into the distance. I always liked all the lights on when we listened to that program.

Grande Prairie RCMP investigate break and enter

On July 31, 2024 at 9:15 p.m., Grande Prairie RCMP received a report of a residential break and enter. Unknown suspect(s) entered the victim's home and accessed several secured firearms in the home including long guns and a shot gun. Also stolen were bicycles, a lap top and a short sleeve Alberta Sherriff Uniform Shirt.

All of the firearms stolen belonged to the victim and were not Alberta Sherriff firearms.

RCMP are working to determine the exact number make and model of the stolen firearms.

Police would like to make the public aware of the stolen Uniform.

Report of a female in distress leads to arrest after high-speed pursuit

On July 28, 2024 at 7:25pm, the Fort St John RCMP received multiple reports of a female passenger in distress, potentially being held against her will, in a vehicle driving at a high rate of speed in the Cecil Lake area, northeast of Fort St John, BC.

Frontline police officers attended and located a vehicle matching the description of the reports and attempted a traffic stop. The driver of the suspect vehicle collided with a police vehicle and then fled at a high rate of speed.
