Mrs. Bertha Adams, 71 years old, died alone in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Easter Sunday. The coroner's report read: "Cause of death...malnutrition." She had wasted away to 50 pounds.

When the state authorities made their preliminary investigation of Mrs. Adams' home, they found a veritable "pig pen...the biggest mess you can imagine." The woman had begged food from neighbours’ back doors and gotten what clothing she had from the Salvation Army. From all outward appearances she was a penniless recluse. But such was not the case.

Dawson Creek unveils "Creekside Courts" with Grand Opening Ceremony

The City of Dawson Creek is excited to announce the completion of the “Creekside Courts,” a new multi-use sports facility located in Kin Park at 9 Street and 110 Avenue. This project, which began with Phase 1 in the fall of 2023, has now reached its final stages with the successful completion of Phase 2 in summer 2024.

NDP MP introduces bill to criminalize residential school denialism

An NDP MP has introduced a bill that would criminalize residential school denialism, saying it would help stop harm caused toward survivors, their families and communities.

If the bill is passed, people could be charged under the Criminal Code for promoting hatred against Indigenous Peoples by condoning, justifying or downplaying the historical and lasting impact of residential schools.

Two suspects charged in foiled firearms theft in Grande Prairie

ALERT (Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams), Grande Prairie RCMP and Grande Prairie Police Service have prevented a significant number of firearms from potentially reaching the streets after a break-and-enter attempt was thwarted.

A total of 19 firearms, including four handguns, were recovered, and two suspects have been charged.

Grande Prairie drivers ticketed for speeding in school zones

Grande Prairie Enforcement Services is encouraging drivers to keep safety in school zones top of mind for the rest of the school year. In the first two weeks of September, 200 tickets were handed out for speeding in school zones in the City of Grande Prairie, between Peace Officers on scene and Automated Traffic Enforcement.

In addition, nine tickets for parking violations were handed out in school zones during that time, and 31 drivers were given verbal warnings.

Foreign ministry rang alarm bell over challenges in countering disinformation online

Canada's foreign ministry expressed alarm about its shrinking ability to counter foreign disinformation online due to limited access to data and the evolving tactics of adversaries, a newly released memo shows. 

The memo, tabled Wednesday at a federal inquiry into foreign interference, noted Canada had led the G7 Rapid Response Mechanism to identify and respond to threats to democracy through open-source data analytics.
