Severe thunderstorms and prolonged heatwave expected to impact Peace Country

Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon as they move from British Columbia into Alberta, potentially bringing strong wind gusts and large hail.

A prolonged heatwave continues with daytime highs ranging from 28 to 36 degrees Celsius, and overnight lows remaining warm between 14 and 21 degrees Celsius, offering little relief.

Cooler temperatures are anticipated to arrive in northwestern Alberta by mid next week, though hot conditions may persist into next weekend in some southern areas.

McLennan RCMP conduct search for individuals caught in Smokey River current

On the evening of July 17, 2024, at approximately 10:00 p.m., McLennan RCMP were alerted to a distressing situation involving two individuals caught in the current of the Smokey River. Emergency services were promptly dispatched to the scene, and police are currently assisting with the ongoing search efforts.

Matthew West adds another accolade to his resume with another number-one song. 

West's 'Don't Stop Praying' recently became his 13th track to reach the top of the Billboard Christian Airplay chart. The achievement ties West with fellow Christian artist, TobyMac for the most number one songs by solo artists on the ranking. 

'Don't Stop Praying' also was West's largest debut streaming week in his career and is on track to be his most streamed song. 

Church fires long-time pastor after finding out he was convicted sex offender

A church in South Carolina just fired their pastor after finding out some disturbing information about him regarding an assault on a 14-year-old girl. 

Pastor Donald Logan has been fired from his position at Eternal Church in Fort Mill, SC, in the U.S.A. It was recently revealed that Logan is a registered sex offender convicted of sexual misconduct with a 14-year-old girl, an incident that took place 27 years ago.

Canadian flights, hospitals, border disrupted during global technology outage

A global technology outage had grounded flights, disrupted hospitals and backed up border crossings in Canada on Friday, as reported issues persisted hours after the issues with Microsoft services were said to be getting fixed.

Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike said that the issue believed to be behind the outage was not a security incident or cyberattack.  The issue affected Microsoft 365 apps and services, and escalating disruptions continued after the technology company said it was gradually fixing it.

A&W in Fairview temporarily closed due to health violations

Alberta Health Services has temporarily closed the A & W in Fairview due to unsanitary conditions. The notice of inspection stated the current conditions may become injurious or dangerous to the public health.  

The restaurant establishment will remain closed until the changes and requirements are completed to the satisfaction of an Executive Officer of Alberta Health Services.

Water quality advisory issued for Iosegun Lake

Due to elevated levels of fecal bacteria currently present in the water of Iosegun Lake, located within the North Zone of Alberta Health Services (AHS), AHS is advising the public not to swim or wade at this beach area, effective immediately.

Elevated levels of fecal bacteria were detected via testing of the lake water at this beach location. At current levels, gastrointestinal illness may result from ingestion of the water at 
Iosegun Lake. As well, there is the possibility of skin, ear and eye infections with water contact.
