Fire Advisory in effect for the City of Grande Prairie

The City of Grande Prairie has issued a fire advisory, effective Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at 12 p.m. due to hot and dry conditions.

Under this advisory:

  • Fire permits for open burning and fireworks will not be issued.
  • Existing burning permits are suspended.
  • New fire pit permits will be issued on a case-by-case basis, for light burning only.

Maple Leaf Foods is creating a new pork business

Maple Leaf Foods is splitting its operations and moving the pork business into a new publicly traded company. 

In a statement on the company website, Curtis Frank, President and CEO of Maple Leaf Foods says as separate companies, Maple Leaf Foods and the new Pork Company will each have exciting prospects, a sharpened execution focus with its own dedicated management team.

Residents reminded about heat safety

The City of Grande Prairie is reminding residents of ways to stay safe in the heat due to forecasted elevated temperatures this week.

“We encourage residents to be aware of the heat and take precautions to avoid heat-related illness,” said Communications Director, Philip Cooper. “Take indoor breaks away from the sun, wear SPF 30 or higher and drink plenty of water to keep yourself safe during higher temperatures. City facilities are available during operational hours for residents to visit and cool off.”

City of Grande Prairie opens Municipal Fee Rebate application

Following City Council’s approval during their June 17 meeting for the amendments to Policy 357, the Development Grants and Incentive Program (DIG), has been revitalized to better serve the needs of developers and property owners.

As part of the DIG Program, the Municipal Fee Rebate, now expanded to include secondary suites, multi-attached dwellings, and large-scale apartment buildings, is accepting applications.

The expanded program provides opportunity for both new projects and the compliance of existing suites.

County residents warned of wildfire danger; Fire Advisory now in effect

The wildfire danger in the Grande Prairie Forest Area is VERY HIGH.

Due to the continuing hot and dry conditions, the County of Grande Prairie Regional Fire Service has issued a fire advisory effective today at 12 p.m. for the entire County, along with the towns of Beaverlodge, Sexsmith and Wembley. 

Extended hours at Grande Prairie spray parks to help beat the heat

The spray parks at Muskoseepi Park and Lions Park in Grande Prairie are open under extended hours of 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. until further notice due to forecasted high temperatures.

The city will update this information once spray parks have returned to regular operating hours.

The Peace Country is currently under a heat warning with temperatures reaching near 37 degrees Celsius. 

Residents of and visitors to the warned regions are advised to take extra precautions to protect themselves, their families and their neighbours. 

Canada Beef is looking at new marketing opportunities

Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay announced over $6 million for the Canadian beef industry yesterday.

Canada Beef will receive over $5.8 million for market development and promotion.

Canada Beef plays a key role in market development worldwide, with offices in Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Mexico, and Hong Kong.

Speakers pull out of speaking at Texas' Gateway Church amid Robert Morris allegations

Two speakers have pulled out of Texas' Gateway Church's, Let's Dive In! Summer Series following the child sex abuse allegations against founder Robert Morris. 

Joyce Meyer and Dr. Ben Carson were both scheduled to speak at the Texas-based church as part of the series but have pulled out. For multiple years, Meyer has been a regular speaker at the church with the most recent message in May. 

A person close to Joyce Meyer Ministries shared anonymously late Monday night that Meyer has decided to stop teaching at Gateway Church in light of recent allegations against Morris.
