Artists rally behind Montreal concert hall after court orders it to stop making noise
Benoit Pinette, known by his stage name Tire le coyote, was set to perform his upcoming album at Montreal's La Tulipe concert hall next year. But after the Quebec Court of Appeal recently ordered the venue to stop making noise that is audible inside an adjacent building, the historic venue temporarily closed its doors.
UWinnipeg welcomes 8 new Indigenous faculty members in effort to advance reconciliation
The University of Winnipeg has announced the hiring of eight Indigenous faculty members across multiple disciplines.
In a press release sent out this week the school says the move is part of its ongoing commitment to reconciliation and enhancing BIPOC representation. These new tenure-track positions span the Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Science, Gupta Faculty of Kinesiology and Applied Health, Faculty of Business and Economics, and Global College.
No deal after two days of negotiating in the Vancouver grain workers strike
Negotiations to end a strike by grain terminal workers in Metro Vancouver have stalled, with the employers' association saying it's "disappointed" with the results of two days of talks.
A statement from the Western Grain Elevator Association says the employer bargaining unit had increased its offer to settle "outstanding issues," but that was rejected.
Canada booking seats on flights out of Lebanon as violence escalates
Global Affairs Canada began booking blocks of seats on the few remaining commercial flights leaving Lebanon on Friday as it issued another urgent plea for any Canadians in the country to leave immediately.
"Canadians need to leave now and we are helping with that," Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said in a statement on X late Friday afternoon.
"Canada has secured seats for Canadians on the limited commercial flights available. If a seat is available, please take it."
CSIS says a former parliamentarian may have worked on behalf of a foreign government
A former parliamentarian is suspected of "having worked to influence parliamentary business" on behalf of an unnamed foreign government, Canada's spy service told a federal inquiry Friday.
The Canadian Security Intelligence Service also cited indications that an unspecified foreign government engaged in meddling to reduce the likelihood of a specific Liberal candidate of being elected federally.
Bryan Little to sign one-day contract to officially retire as a Winnipeg Jet
Bryan Little, a cornerstone of the Winnipeg Jets 2.0 franchise, is set to retire from the NHL in a fitting full-circle moment.
The former centre will sign a one-day contract with the Jets, allowing him to officially retire as a member of the team he spent his entire career with.
In a statement released on Friday morning, Little said he was grateful for the opportunity. "It’s a great honour that I can retire as a member of the Winnipeg Jets and end my playing career with the organization where I was drafted and played my entire NHL career," he said.
Three children at centre of abduction case found, mother taken into custody
A woman wanted in connection to the alleged abduction of her three children has been arrested.
In June 2024, 55-year-old Astrid Schiller and her three children were located at the Boissevain Port of Entry.
They were first reported missing in December 2023 from Durham, Ontario.
The kids were taken into care and their mother, Schiller, was arrested as a result of an outstanding Warrant of Arrest for Child Abduction from Durham Regional Police.
'There's hundreds of thousands of books here': Annual Book Market is open to raise money for HSC
Winnipeggers are invited to support a good cause while picking up some new reading material on Friday and Saturday at St. Vital Centre.
The busy mall is hosting the 64 annual Children's Hospital Book Market, with all proceeds going to HSC Children's Hospital to help sick and injured kids.
The two-day event relies on more than 300 volunteers. “We are so grateful for the incredible support of our community of dedicated volunteers and their commitment to give back to the Children’s Hospital Book Market,” says Carol Irving, Book Market Coordinator.

This weekend, choristers converge on Assiniboine Park in a free outdoor festival celebrating the joys of group singing.
First presented by the Manitoba Choral Association in 2022, “Gather” was originally thought to be a one-off opportunity for choirs and audiences to come together safely outdoors as society emerged cautiously from the pandemic.
