Back-to-back grass fires break out in Winnipeg Sunday, one spans four football fields

Winnipeg fire crews were kept busy Sunday battling two separate grass fires, just minutes apart. 

The first fire broke out just after 8 a.m. in the 300 block of McPhillips Street. Firefighters used specialized equipment, including the WFPS Bison, to put out the fire. It took firefighters about 45 minutes to get the blaze under control.

May 5 marks Red Dress Day, the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People.

The day serves as a way to remind people about the ongoing crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQIA+ people across the country.

To help commemorate the day, the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs and the First Nation Family Advocate's office have planned a memorial walk and ceremony. 

Winnipeg police investigate fatal weekend stabbing on Waterfront Drive

Winnipeg police are asking for the public's assistance in solving the city's latest homicide. 

On Sunday, May 4, at around 1:45 a.m., officers were called to the 500 block of Waterfront Drive for the report of a stabbing. 

When they arrived, they located a man suffering from stab wounds. Officers applied chest seals while they waited for paramedics to arrive. 

The victim, who has been identified as 43-year-old Kerry Eastman, was transported to hospital in critical condition, where he later died of his injuries.
