Diane Wing is feeling good as she heads into her final day of running 500 km across Manitoba to raise funds and awareness for mental health and suicide prevention.
"I actually feel amazing [going into the final day of running]," says Wing. "It's almost overwhelming, all the support. It's been so wonderful."
For the past nine days, this grade one teacher from Portage la Prairie has run 50 km a day, running the number one highway across the province. Today, she plans on crossing the finish line at the Manitoba/Ontario border surrounded by family and friends.
"Our original [fundraising] goal was actually $5,000, and I thought that was too much. I'm blown away."
Wing decided to run these 500 km in 10 days to raise funds as well for the Canadian Mental Health Association and in the middle of her run she passed her $10,000 goal. The donation page will stay open until Wing's actual 50th birthday, which is July 27.
Last Sunday, Wing ran through Portage la Prairie where she works and stopped by the school to hand out freezies.
"It was so much fun, it was so cute. I loved it. My daughter and my grandkids were there. Seeing them, it was hard to hold back the tears. "
Wing expects to be finished today aound 2:00 p.m. . Meeting her at the finish line will be her son, who drove the whole time during the last 10 days, her partner Peter, her daughter, two grandkids, her sister, and friends.
