Year six for Brooke and Koda's iced tea stand, supporting three-year-old with leukemia

Years ago, Brooke Peters and Koda Reimer decided to have an iced tea stand. Why an iced tea stand? 

“Boredom. Mostly boredom," Reimer recalls. "Our siblings had gone to camp, but we were too little to go, so we were sitting in her house on her couch, and we were just dead bored. We decided to do an iced stand and we decided to raise it for Cancer Care because we had a bunch of family going through cancer at the time.”  

What started because of boredom has inspired community members around the southeast.   

Charity BBQ to support Agape House's mission of supporting individuals facing violence

Local charity Agape House in Steinbach aims to support women and children in the Eastman region facing family violence through safe shelter, counselling and other forms of support. 

Executive Director Tracy Whitby says they have been facing a busy season and are seeing people seek a safe shelter and “making steps forward.” 

Over 220 must-see vehicles on display at MHV's Heritage Classic Car Show

There was only one place to be for car enthusiasts in the southeast on Saturday.  

The Mennonite Heritage Village (MHV) hosted their annual Heritage Classic Car Show, and over 220 cars lined up on the village's Main St. and grounds. It is the most entries they've had from all of the car shows they have hosted. From Mustangs to Cadillacs and everything in between, it was all a sight to see.  

U15 A Girls Softball Provincial Championships in photos

Loaded bases, walk-up music and team spirit are the sights and sounds at the A.D. Penner Park in Steinbach this weekend. 

The U15 A Girls Softball Provincial Championships kicked off on Friday, and many teams and families came to support the athletes in their tournament runs.  

Twenty-eight teams are competing to be provincial champions, including the home team Steinbach Storm. 

Over $9400 raised for Safe Families Canada Steinbach at Charity BBQ

It was yet another record-breaking day for the Taste of Summer Charity Barbecue.  

Despite the drizzle, many showed up at the corner of Main and Lumber to support Safe Families Canada Steinbach. Together with other donors, we raised $9415.19. 

Sue Doerksen of Safe Families Canada Steinbach says the funds raised will allow them to “continue to do the work” for the community. 

U13 Eastman Wildcats takes home gold and named provincial champions

Rain or shine, the show must go on.  

That was the story at this weekend’s U13 AAA Girls Provincial Championships at the Friedensfeld Community Centre, where home team Eastman Wildcats clawed their way to the championship game and took home the gold medal. 

They faced the Westman Magic and came away victorious with a final score of 6-5, naming them provincial champions. 

Perogies, dancing and violins: Gardenton Ukrainian Multicultural Festival in photos

The lack of sunshine didn’t stop the festivities at Saturday’s Gardenton Ukrainian Multicultural Festival.  

The 165-year-old festival kicked off with a worship service and a tour of the St. Michaels Church, one of the oldest Ukrainian churches in Canada. 

It was followed by a lineup of entertaining performances by Irish, African and Ukrainian dance and musical groups.  

SRSS Football coordinator "very happy" with changes to high school football league

The Winnipeg High School Football League (WHSFL) and its teams will see significant changes for the upcoming fall season.  

The A, AA, and AAA divisions will be replaced with AAAA and AAA. The decision was made to keep alignment with other MHSAA (Manitoba High School Athletics Association) sports.  

Provincials baseball, perogies and dancing: What's happening this weekend

This weekend, learn history and catch some baseball action in our southeast communities.   

The Gardenton Ukrainian Multicultural Festival is on Saturday, July 15, and it kicks off with a church service at 10:30 AM and a tour of St. Michael’s Church tour at 11 AM.  

President Kelvin Chubaty says this has been an annual festival since 1965, and “anybody is welcome to the event.”
