Assaults and low-flying aircraft top first September police report from Biggar

The Biggar RCMP unveiled a sizeable list of calls in their first report of September. 

The most notable incident in the report had to do with a situation involving two adults, that resulted in a pair of assault charges. 

"A 31-year-old female and male have both been charged with assault on each other and placed on conditions of no contact to try and dilute their toxic issues. Both will once again appear in Biggar Provincial court on Nov 5th."

The other headline call of the report, seasonal farm work drew the ire of an individual in the Biggar area.

RCMP urging water safety on Lake Diefenbaker after incidents

The Outlook RCMP is pleading for public safety around Lake Diefenbaker and the South Saskatchewan River following two waterway incidents earlier this summer.

According to a release from the Saskatchewan RCMP issued on Saturday, the first incident late last month involved two youth fishing, who ended up being stranded on a sandbar.

"Unfamiliar with the South Saskatchewan River, rising water levels and decreasing daylight left them unable to return to shore," says the Saskatchewan RCMP.

Semi rollover closes road near Provost for several hours

A semi rollover closed a section of road near Provost for more than five hours Wednesday evening.

Provost RCMP said the crash happened shortly after 5 p.m. on Range Road 14, between Township Roads 382 and 384. The road was shut down while emergency crews responded and the vehicle was removed.

Traffic was limited to a single alternating lane for part of the evening before the highway fully reopened around 10:30 p.m.

Mounties thanked drivers for their patience and cooperation during the closure.

Could farmers face another tariff?

It looks like India is thinking about implementing an import duty on yellow peas. 

India Pulses and Grains Association is concerned that an increase in yellow pea production in Canada and Russia could result in more imports.

They say ongoing imports have brought down prices, which could discourage Indian farmers from expanding their own pulse production.

The IPGA says in order to raise the price of yellow peas in the domestic market, they are calling on the Indian government to impose a 30 to 40 per cent import duty.

Poilievre calls on Liberals to scrap the temporary foreign worker program

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is calling on the Liberals to scrap the temporary foreign worker program, arguing it has caused an employment crisis among young Canadians.

"The Liberals have to answer why is it that they're shutting our own youth out of jobs and replacing them with low-wage, temporary foreign workers from poor countries who are ultimately being exploited," Poilievre told a news conference Wednesday morning in Mississauga, Ont.

"We want Canadian workers to have Canadian jobs. We want to bring back high wages."

Carney says his ministers are looking for ways to cut spending at cabinet retreat

Prime Minister Mark Carney and his cabinet will meet behind closed doors for a second day in a row today, as the Liberal government prepares for Parliament's return in a little under two weeks.

Cabinet is discussing efforts to spur industrial investment, refocus Ottawa's spending priorities for the coming fall budget and counter U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs.

The federal government is expected in October to table Carney's first budget since taking office.

Saskatchewan sees drop in per-student spending despite national growth in education costs

Education spending in Canadian public schools has grown steadily over the past decade, rising from $63 billion in 2013-14 to $88.4 billion in 2022-23, a nominal increase of 40.3 per cent, according to the Fraser Institute

Nationally, inflation-adjusted per-student spending increased by 5.9 per cent over the same period. However, several provinces, including Saskatchewan, experienced declines in spending per student after adjusting for inflation.

Saskatoon urgent care centre reaches construction milestone

Saskatchewan officials say construction of the Saskatoon Urgent Care Centre has passed the 25 per cent mark, with foundation work, concrete floor slabs and exterior framing now complete.

Premier Scott Moe said Tuesday the project is progressing on schedule and will give residents faster access to frontline health services.

“We are very excited to see great progress being made on the new Saskatoon Urgent Care Centre, which will take pressure off our hospitals and give Saskatoon residents quicker access to frontline health care,” Moe said in a statement.

Male arrested after police pursuit, multiple vehicle thefts near Maidstone: RCMP

A 25-year-old man from Brampton, Ont., faces more than a dozen charges after RCMP say he attempted to flee police in a series of stolen vehicles near Maidstone last week.

On Aug. 26 around 2:10 p.m., Saskatchewan RCMP traffic officers responded to reports of an erratic driver on Highway 16 west of Maidstone. Police say the vehicle sped away when officers attempted a traffic stop, driving into and out of ditches before becoming disabled on a grid road.
