Police, rescuers respond as rock slide hits hikers in Banff; injuries undetermined
Rescue crews, police and paramedics scrambled to a remote region of Banff National Park late Thursday amid reports that a group of hikers were hit by a rock slide, causing possible injuries and deaths.
“The initial report indicated there were multiple hikers and there may be serious injuries and/or fatalities,” RCMP Cpl. Gina Slaney said in a news release.
Parks Canada, in a statement said, it is responding to a report of "a serious rockfall incident with involvement near Bow Glacier Falls in Banff National Park."
SECPSD Director of Education says school year went smoothly despite potential disruptions
The southeast is wrapping up its school year soon, with the final day for classes in the Southeast Cornerstone Public School Division (SECPSD) set for June 26th.
With summer vacation set to start next week, SECPSD Director of Education Keith Keating had nothing but positive messages about the 2024-25 school year.
"I think it was an excellent year. We saw a lot of good things happen in school, a lot of accomplishments from kids across the system."
Saskatchewan Trucking Association shows appreciation with summer BBQs for truck drivers
The Saskatchewan Trucking Association (STA) hit the highway to thank truck drivers with a free BBQ lunch in partnership with the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol.
At designated weigh stations, trucks are stopped under flashing patrol lights and drivers are welcomed with hot meals as a gesture of gratitude for their vital role in keeping the province’s supply chains moving.
UPDATE: Reports of tornados touch down near Hirsch, North Portal
UPDATE: Around 9:30 pm last night, Environment Canada lifted the Tornado Watch alerts for areas around the southeast.
Reports on social media from residents show that a tornado touched down near Hirsch, SK, just east of Bienfait. According to some eyewitness accounts, funnel clouds started to form near North Portal and made its way north.
Environment Canada has yet to confirm these reports. We will keep you updated as this story unfolds.

Saskatchewan releases letter detailing commitment to coal past 2030 date
The government of Saskatchewan will be keeping its coal-generating assets online past the federal 2030 cutoff date for coal power. In a recent letter to SaskPower employees, sent from Jeremy Harrison, Minister of Crown Investments Corporation and Minister Responsible for SaskPower, he outlined the province's reasoning and next steps for coal power in the province.
According to the letter, SaskPower is projecting that power demand will massively increase over the next two decades. The government has decided upon an all-of-the-above approach to meeting the growth in demand.
Sexual assault case against former Estevan Bruin adjourned to July 3
The sexual assault case against former Estevan Bruins player Mason Strutt was adjourned to July 3 during proceedings in Moose Jaw Provincial Court on Wednesday.
Estevan lawyer Kathryn Gilliss appeared by phone on Strutt’s behalf.
She told the court she received the bulk of the disclosure on Friday, but inquired about a few missing items related to Strutt’s arrest.
Ottawa shows no signs of limiting MAID after UN panel calls for reversal
Ottawa is giving no sign that it intends to amend existing legislation on medical assistance in dying — something a UN committee called for earlier this spring.
The federal minister responsible for disabilities spoke at a hearing of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities last week, about two months after the committee called on Canada to repeal the 2021 law that expanded eligibility for assisted dying to those whose deaths were not reasonably foreseeable.
