Viragos set to unleash new talent in season-opener

The U18 Viragos are gearing up for their season opener as they travel to Melville this weekend to face the Vipers. With a roster brimming with new talent and a determined mindset, the Viragos are eager to prove themselves in their first game of the season.

Head coach of the Viragos Mark Tribiger noted that this is not the first time that the Viragos have faced the Vipers.  

Estevan officers execute arrest warrant for traffic safety violation

Estevan police tackled a range of incidents this week, from assisting with a traffic safety arrest to addressing noise complaints and managing an intoxicated individual.

Estevan police assisted the White Butte RCMP Detachment in executing an arrest warrant related to a traffic safety matter. The warrant involved a woman from Estevan, who was released from custody with a new court date set.

Southeast farmers close in on halfway mark for harvest

Producers in the southeast have made considerable harvest progress with nearly half of all crops already in the bin, above the province’s average for this time of year. 

According to the latest crop report from the Ministry of Agriculture, harvest is 47 per cent complete. This is ahead of the five year average of 36 per cent, and the 10-year average of 40 per cent.

Producers are busy combining, swathing, baling straw, hauling bales, and monitoring bins for heating.

While some moisture was recorded in the region, the risk of fire remains elevated.

Manitoba RCMP make arrest for car thief who tore through southeast

A case of stolen cars reported back in August has finally seen a person arrested in a neighbouring province

On August 21, the Broadview RCMP were advised by the RCMP in Manitoba that a stolen truck was heading to their area. Moosomin RCMP spotted the truck on Highway 8 north of Moosomin and attempted to pull the vehicle over. The driver did not pull over and fled the scene.

Midale excited to reignite Sparks, Embers, and Girl Guides programs this fall

After years of absence, Sparks, Embers, and Girl Guides are making a much-anticipated return to Midale, bringing with them new opportunities for local girls to connect, learn, and grow in a positive, empowering environment.

Megan Birdsell, the Sparks leader and contact for Girl Guides in Midale, is looking forward to bringing the groups back to the community, with the first meetings scheduled for Sept. 26.

“It’s so exciting. We haven’t had Girl Guides in Midale for many years, but it’s such a positive group to bring into the community,” she said.

Bruins coach says preseason loss gives important lessons for younger players

The Estevan Bruins couldn't find any success during last night's first preseason game, as they lost to the Virden Oil Capitals 5-2.

Being a preseason game, which won't affect the season's point totals, the team decided to give some younger players experience in their game against the Capitals.

Head Coach Jason Tatarnic says that the learning experience is invaluable for those younger players.

Province celebrates economic drivers during Transportation Week

Saskatchewan is celebrating Transportation Week, taking a look at all of the good done by transportation workers around the province.

That includes trains, planes, and vehicles that help to move people, goods, and commodities that carry the province forward.

Minister of Highways Lori Carr says that it's important to respect and pay attention to transportation.

PHOTOS: Dense fog covers Estevan for second time this week; motorists on high alert

For the second time this week, dense fog has arrived in Estevan and motorists are staying on high alert. 

This comes after wildfire smoke turned the skies orange yesterday and fog kicked off the first day of classes on Tuesday. Environment Canada has not placed any advisories in the area yet. Visibility for motorists has been cut significantly, with drivers only seeing about 2-3 seconds ahead of them. The Estevan Bypass and highways around the city were near-zero visibility. 

Elections Saskatchewan sending info to 800,000 voters for fall election

The provincial election is drawing closer with Saskatchewan residents voting for their MLAs this fall.

Getting all of the 800,000 registered voters to prepare for the election is a tough task, which Elections Saskatchewan is working on during the leadup.

Spokesperson Tim Kydd talks about some of the work they're doing over the next couple of months.
