Estevan City Council looks at lot tenders, with one property seeing fierce competition

Multiple lots were up for tender at the latest city council meeting, as councillors looked at some of the bids received. The three lots, 1132 5th Street, 1127 5th Street, and 1233 3rd Street, all received bids, though one received a lot more attention.

Beginning with 1132 5th Street, two bids came in, with the top bid from Nguyen Minh Pham for $10,390. The outstanding property taxes total $21,260.50, minus penalties, coming out to $16,610.55. The city expects to receive $4,100 yearly from the property through property taxes. The council unanimously agreed to accept the offer.

Dual vehicle collisions keep Estevan police busy

Estevan police responded to a busy day yesterday, handling two vehicle collisions, a stolen bicycle, and two linked assaults.

The first collision occurred at King Street and Spruce Drive, where a northbound pickup turning west was struck by an eastbound truck, causing it to flip onto its side. The driver was assisted from the vehicle and treated by EMS. Both trucks were extensively damaged and towed.

Estevan’s wellness movement grows with games, dinners and welcome kits

The Estevan Community Wellness Group is expanding its efforts to foster connection and mental wellness through a series of events and initiatives, including monthly game nights, a second annual dinner, and a new welcome package for newcomers. Air Canada to begin cancelling flights ahead of possible work stoppage on Saturday

Air Canada says it will begin a gradual suspension of flights to allow an orderly shutdown as it faces a potential work stoppage by its flight attendants on Saturday.

The airline says the first flights will be cancelled Thursday, with more on Friday and a complete cessation of flying by Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge by the weekend.

Air Canada Express flights operated by Jazz and PAL Airlines will continue to operate as normal. 

Air Canada says customers whose flights are cancelled will be notified and they will be eligible for a full refund.

$20,000 surprise boosts Kenosee Lake Kitchen Party’s youth programs

The Kenosee Lake Kitchen Party has received a surprise $20,000 donation that will help secure its popular children’s and teen programs for the next five years.

Founder and executive director Michelle Amy said the gift came unexpectedly from donor David Hongisto. “David contacted me out of the blue, and you could have knocked me over with a feather. It was such a beautiful surprise,” she said.

A recent community meeting hosted by the RM of Tecumseh brought together residents, law enforcement, and political leaders to confront the growing issue of rural crime. The event featured a candid and informative presentation by RCMP Sgt. Warner Ignatiuk, alongside remarks from MLA Hon. Daryl Harrison, who addressed provincial efforts to support justice reform and community safety.

The City of Estevan put out a new policy for food and beverages at the Estevan Leisure Centre so they could have a better level of clarity for the area and what they expect for food.

The new policy was adopted to "better reflect the current needs of facility users", with City Manager Jeff Ward talking about the reason it's before the council.
