“A Celebration of Community”: Midale hosts premiere of Mainprize Documentary

A heartfelt tribute more than a decade in the making took center stage in Midale over the Saskatchewan Day long weekend, as filmmaker Jack Hilkewich premiered a special extended version of Mainprize, a documentary honouring one of the most iconic figures in southeast Saskatchewan’s history.

While Moose Jaw’s Western Development Museum recently played host to a dazzling array of LEGO masterpieces at the annual Brickspo showcase, southeast Saskatchewan has something just as exciting to look forward to, especially Estevan.

Ray Jacobs, board member and 14-year veteran of the Saskatchewan LEGO Users Group (SLUG), says the group’s biggest show of the year is just the beginning.

Barn dance with JJ Voss to support Stoughton Early Learning Facility outdoor upgrades

A barn dance fundraiser at Keg Creek Ranch is set to bring music, supper and community spirit together on Aug. 29, with proceeds going toward outdoor upgrades at the Stoughton Early Learning Facility.

“We’ve got the gates open at 5:30 and we’ve got supper at 6:30,” said organizer Kerry Gilroy. “We’re going to have a barn dance with JJ Voss at 8:00, and we’re raising money for the Stoughton Early Learning Facility.”

First week of August kicks off with storms and chilly weather in the southeast

 

August, normally the warm and sunny end to the summer, is instead seeing a lot of clouds, rain, and a bit of cool air coming into the southeast this week. Environment and Climate Change Canada's forecast begins the week with storms today, while the end of the week will see even more moisture.

Semi truck reported stolen near Wauchope

Carlyle RCMP are investigating the theft of a semi unit reported missing on August 4, 2025. The vehicle is a white 1998 International with no trailer, taken from the Wauchope, Saskatchewan area sometime over the past few days.

The truck has a Nutrien Ag Solutions sticker on the doors and was last seen with Saskatchewan plate 243 GBM.

Anyone with information about the theft or the vehicle's whereabouts is asked to contact Carlyle RCMP at 306-453-6707. You can also call 310-RCMP for immediate response or submit a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Child killed in bike collision in Ogema

Coronach RCMP are investigating a fatal collision involving a child on a bicycle in Ogema, Saskatchewan.

Around 5:30 p.m. on July 31, emergency crews were called to the intersection of Bradley Street and Saskatchewan Avenue. Investigators say a vehicle struck a child on a bike. The child, a boy under the age of 10, was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS. His family has been notified.

The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with police.

The investigation is ongoing with assistance from a Saskatchewan RCMP collision reconstructionist.

Volcanic eruption halfway around the world could lead to cooler fall

An eruption on the other side of the world might end up having an effect on climate here i the southeast, as Environment and Climate Change Canada is keeping a close eye on recent events. Following an 8.8 magnitude earthquake, the Klyuchevskoy volcano in Russia erupted, one of the highest active volcanoes in the world.

Meteorologist Crawford Luke says they're keeping a close eye on how the weather may be affected.

From storybooks in the park to movie nights on a theatre-sized wall, the Estevan Public Library (EPL) is turning up the volume on summer programming this August. Families can look forward to outdoor story time at Rusty Duce Memorial Park, a Wicked Watch Party with themed snacks, and a pizza-fuelled wind-up for the TD Summer Reading Program. After unionized Canada Post workers reject 'final offers,' what happens next?

Labour experts say another postal service strike is unlikely after unionized Canada Post workers rejected their employer's latest round of offers in a forced vote and the parties mull their next steps.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers said Friday that the roughly 55,000 members represented by the union shot down the Canada Post's latest proposal, which would've seen wage hikes of about 13 per cent over four years and restructuring to add part-time workers to the deal.

SaskPower purchases land at Rafferty as SMR Site selection nears final phase

Boundary Dam and Rafferty Reservoir both remain in the running for Saskatchewan’s first nuclear reactor.

SaskPower has confirmed the purchase of land near Rafferty Reservoir, marking a significant step forward in the selection process for Saskatchewan’s first small modular nuclear reactor, but the utility says no final decision has yet been made.

In an email to Discover Estevan, SaskPower’s Joel Cherry explained that the land purchase is meant to preserve Rafferty as a viable option.
