11,000 provincial workers receive retroactive pay increases, enhancements in new contract

After two years of bargaining between the Saskatchewan Government and General Employees Union and the province, a new contract has been voted on and has passed.

The deal had been introduced back in the spring after an impasse was declared in February between the two sides.

Estevan Golden Eels Host spectacular swim meet: A weekend of wins and waves!

Over 120 swimmers from eight clubs participated in the invitationals hosted by the Estevan Golden Eels Swim Club over the weekend.

Scott Walton, president of the Golden Eels Swim Club, said the day was a big success, bringing in over 300 spectators to cheer the athletes on.

“We had some great performances from swimmers from all clubs. It was a very successful day, and I know the kids had a lot of fun. The meet was well-run and organized,” Walton said.

Ag in Motion is underway

This year marks the 10th Anniversary for Ag in Motion. 

Western Canada's largest outdoor farm show at Langham, Saskatchewan, features over 600 exhibitors and is expected to attract about 32,000 visitors over the three days.

Show Manager Rob O'Connor says Ag in Motion is also attracting a number of international visitors with over 230 guests coming from Australia, Africa, Europe, Mexico and the United States.

He notes what sets this show apart from others is the crop plot trials, live equipment demonstrations, and the always popular ride n drive area.

Estevan Fire Rescue says provincial fire ban not stretching to nearby RMs

In a release sent out yesterday, Estevan Fire Rescue Chief Rick Davies talked about the provincial fire ban which came into effect last week.

The ban that came into effect includes open fires, controlled burns, and fireworks as well as all land within 4.5 km of provincial forest boundaries.

The ban has yet to come down, with officials specifying that environmental conditions would need to improve, such as a continued lowering of the temperature or more moisture coming into the province.

Estevan tennis athletes representing the southeast for Sask. Summer Games

The Saskatchewan Summer Games is just around the corner and Team Southeast is looking to leave its mark in the competition. The Estevan Tennis Club will be sending 10 athletes to Lloydminster next week. 

"I'm very excited to see this number of kids in [the] Estevan area trying out for tennis. It's just great. They're all very pumped. They're so excited to be playing and they have come a long way in the last two weeks, and I'm really looking forward to the last week of practice," shared tennis coach Arnold Betzema.

RM of Estevan asks for city council support in raising speed limits on highway approaches.

The RM of Estevan is looking for a bit of support to increase the speed limits for the highways surrounding Estevan.

During last night's city council meeting, a resolution for the RM went to the city council asking them to write a letter of support for the proposal.

Estevan council member Lindsay Clark says that they'd look to check with the Southeast Transportation Planning Committee for a safety study, which would then go to the province.

Cooler break in weather expected to heat up later this week

After some extreme heat last week temperatures have now settled down, but some more heat is just around the corner.

The current cooling is going to send overnight temperatures dropping precipitously, down to below 10 degrees Tuesday night.
