SaskTel is developing new assets to help tech companies better connect with farmers by providing them with more background infrastructure. The project's full name is The Smart Agriculture Data Hub, and it will provide tech companies with a digital toolkit to help them reach more farmers.

Heather Clair, the marketing manager for Smart Ag, says the program is all about partnering with all the right companies to deliver what Saskatchewan farmers need.

It's the election that most southeast voters have been waiting for.

The Federal Court of Appeal has dismissed a challenge of a government ban on firearms that Ottawa considers fit only for the battlefield, not hunting or sport shooting. 

The Liberals outlawed some 1,500 firearm models and variants in May 2020, meaning they could no longer be legally used, sold or imported. 

The move was generally applauded by gun control advocates as a first step toward removing firearms used in mass shootings from circulation. 

Liberal Leader Mark Carney's French language skills will be put to the test, and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre will seek to turn his numbers around, when the five main federal party leaders square off in Montreal tonight in the first of two debates ahead of election day on April 28.

The two-hour French-language debate will be moderated by Radio-Canada's Patrice Roy and will focus on five themes: the cost of living, energy and climate, the trade war, identity and sovereignty, and immigration and foreign affairs.

The Estevan Mermaids Artistic Swimming Club brought home a wave of medals and top-10 finishes from a recent prairie competition, with athletes excelling in both individual and team events across multiple age categories.

In the 10U Limited category, Ciara Schell finished second, while Tylee Picton placed seventh and Laikynn Shier took ninth. In 12U Limited figures, Sophia Vibe came in sixth, Ella Biette was seventh, while Jillianne Velasquez, Ava Story and Brooklyn Saxon placed 15th, 17th and 19th, respectively.

Southeast Advocates is inviting the public to a job fair on Wednesday aimed at connecting jobseekers with local employers and promoting opportunities in the community.

The event will take place April 16 at Wylie Mitchell Hall, running from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Held in partnership with the Estevan Chamber of Commerce and funded by CECS — a francophone organization based in Saskatoon — the fair is designed to showcase career options in Estevan and other rural areas of Saskatchewan.

The southeast has felt its first substantial spring rain over the weekend, as a system that came in Saturday night has finally passed us by. With farmers looking to get moisture in their fields and homeowners wanting their lawns to green up, that moisture can be good if it comes down at the right times.

Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Stephen Berg says that the amounts we saw were somewhat substantial for the area.

Josh Sale tipped a point shot from Dallen Oxelgren just over five minutes into overtime to give the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings a berth in the SJHL finals. The goal gave the Red Wings a 3-2 win in the game and a 4-2 win in the series over the Flin Flon Bombers. 

"I just saw the shot coming and realized I probably needed to deflect it," Sale said of the series-winning goal. "I deflected it in, and I kind of blacked out for a second, then realized we won. It's kind of the best feeling in the world."

The Estevan Extreme 13U Girls wrapped up their volleyball season this past weekend with a strong showing at the Volleyball Saskatchewan Provincials in Regina.

Competing in Division 1—the highest tier of play—the team faced off against some of the top 13U teams from across the province and held their own every step of the way.

Pool play began with back-to-back three-set battles against Regina Summit Red and the CVVC Aces. Though the Extreme came up just short in both matches, they bounced back with a confident straight-set win over Blitz Thunder.
