Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is promising that a government led by him would use the notwithstanding clause to override Charter rights to implement his tough-on-crime agenda — something no prime minister has ever done.
Poilievre was campaigning in Montreal on Monday, where he announced he would pass a law to allow judges to impose consecutive life sentences in cases of multiple murders. The Supreme Court of Canada ruled in 2022 that imposing consecutive life sentences violates an offender's Charter rights.
Fill The Truck Food Drive drives home food and cash for Salvation Army
The Estevan community helped out a local organization by coming out to support a food drive last week put on by Golden West. The Fill The Truck Food Drive was held at the Southern Plains Co-op, with a truck donated by Murray GM for the event.
The food and cash donations raised went towards helping out the Salvation Army Food Bank in Estevan, with Community Ministries Director Ronza Reynard thrilled with the results.
Estevan police respond to vehicle fire, hit and run
Estevan police responded to 47 calls for service over the weekend, ranging from disturbances to a vehicle fire and a reported hit and run.
EPS assisted Estevan Fire Rescue with a vehicle fire on a residential property in the south end of the city. No injuries were reported.
A hit and run was reported at a business in the northeast area of the city and remains under investigation.
Police received a call expressing concern about a dog left in a vehicle for an extended period of time. The vehicle had left the area before officers arrived.

The Estevan Recreational Dance Club’s season has officially come to an end, finishing on a high note with two sold-out performances.
“I’m very proud of all the dancers for performing on that stage and having an absolute blast,” said Brooke Wilson, head instructor and director of the Estevan Recreational Dance Club. “It was so much fun as their instructor to watch them on stage and to just celebrate them and all of their hard work.”
Estevan Fire and Rescue handles vehicle fire, collision and false alarms
Estevan Fire and Rescue responded to a series of emergency calls across the city last week, including a confirmed vehicle fire and multiple false alarms triggered by on-site work.
On April 7, just before noon, crews were dispatched to a commercial fire alarm in the north-central area. A duty officer determined the alarm had been triggered by on-site contractor work, and there was no emergency. Responding crews were stood down.

Macoun Youth Group serves up success at spaghetti night fundraiser
The Macoun Youth Group of Awesome hosted a spaghetti night fundraiser and silent auction on Friday night, raising over $3,000 for the youth group.
The annual event included a by-donation spaghetti dinner prepared and served by the youth, alongside a silent and live auction. A big-ticket item from the night was a quilt made by members of the church, which was purchased for $300 then donated back to be auctioned off for another $225.
