Trump threatens 35 per cent tariffs on Canada on Aug. 1 in letter posted online
U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to impose 35 per cent tariffs on Canadian imports on Aug. 1 in a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney posted on social media Thursday night, evidently setting a new date for bilateral negotiations between the two countries.
Canada and the United States had committed to working on a new economic and security agreement with a July 21 deadline for a deal. The boosted tariff pressures call into question progress toward the initial time frame.
Room to Grow: Killarney seniors rally for bigger, better gathering space
Fundraising efforts are in full swing for the Killarney New Horizon Seniors' Centre's expansion project. Local residents have been attending a variety of summer events to work their way up to the $300,000 cost to expand the building 30 feet to the front of the building on Mountain Avenue.
New Horizon Seniors' President, Barb Case, says the reason for the expansion was quite simple; they've outgrown their facility.
Stormy Thursday night, with Tornado Warnings issued for parts of the southwest
It was a stormy evening for some pockets of Western Manitoba with several Tornado Warnings and Severe Thunderstorm Warnings issued Thursday night.
Both the Municipality of Boissevain-Morton and Cartwright-Roblin had Tornado Warnings issued mid-evening with Environment Canada indicating the particular storm cell which travelled over those regions was showing rotation on RADAR. Several storm chasers on the ground also reported on social media it was rotating, and one indicated a funnel cloud briefly extended downward from the cell while it was northwest of Boissevain.

In this week’s scam, you receive a text message that appears to be from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The text states that you must pay a traffic fine by a certain date. If you don’t pay on time, your vehicle registration will be suspended, and you’ll lose your driving privileges. Some versions of the message even state that you’ll go to jail or your credit score will be affected if you don't pay.
IIU investigating shooting of dog on Swan Lake First Nation
Manitoba's Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating the shooting death of a dog in Swan Lake First Nation.
Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) notified the IIU of the incident that occurred around 730am the morning of June 11th. According to the notification, an MFNPS officer attended a residence on Swan Lake First Nation to make an arrest. No arrest was made, and upon leaving the residence, the officer was bitten by a dog. The officer returned to the residence a short time later and fatally shot the dog.
McDonald welcomes family's to see Heavy Events at Deloraine Fair
For a second year, the Deloraine Fair will feature Heavy Events and Jason McDonald couldn't be more thrilled to be back in the Westman area.
"We're very excited," McDonald says with a smile. "This will be our second year in Deloraine, so we're looking forward to going back out there and putting on a good show. We had a decent crowd last year, and all our athletes are pretty pumped to be back there because it was a great time, everyone was so wonderful to us."

RCMP lay charges in theft and weapons investigations
Local RCMP responded to 283 calls for service between June 30 and July 6, with files ranging from traffic offences to theft, assaults, and weapons charges.
The calls come from across the Central Plains area, including Portage, Treherne, Amaranth and nearby rural municipalities.
Traffic and provincial offences top the list
Police delt with 68 traffic offences under the Highway Traffic Act during the week, as well as seven vehicle collisions and one impaired driver.
Manitoba renews provincewide emergency order as wildfires rage, forcing thousands out
Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew again declared a provincewide state of emergency Thursday, as renewed wildfires forced thousands out of their homes, some for the second time in weeks.
Kinew said the order, the second since late May, is critical to rally resources.
"We're going to be asking Manitobans to be helping out in a number of ways," Kinew told a news conference.
"We want to underscore just how serious this wildfire season is."

Rodney Funk, 82, of Horndean-Rosenheim area passed away Monday, July 7th at Boundary Trails Health Centre. He is survived by his wife Charlene, 1 sister, 1 brother, his mother-in-law, 1 brother-in-law, and their families.
The funeral service for Rodney Funk will be held Monday, July 14th at 2pm at South Park Mennonite Brethren Church, Altona with burial at Rosenheim Cemetery.
Viewing will be at Wiebe Funeral Home, Altona Sunday, July 13th from 1 to 9pm and at the church prior to the service.
