Drivers in Portage la Prairie are finally getting some relief at the pumps as gas prices begin to ease, and experts say the downward trend may stick around for the next couple of months.
Just a few weeks ago, motorists were paying about $1.43 per litre. Today, prices have dipped closer to $1.35, and industry watchers expect that number to slide further as fall sets in.
Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, says the recent shift is largely tied to seasonal patterns and supply stability in the south.
Watchdog clears RCMP in 2022 Grande Prairie in-custody death
Alberta’s police watchdog has cleared RCMP officers in a 2022 in-custody death in Grande Prairie.
The individual was arrested for public mischief and later died after a medical episode in a holding cell.
ASIRT found staff failed to recognize the medical distress for more than two hours.
Crown prosecutors ruled no charges will be laid against the officers involved.

Video: Highway 7 traffic delayed after semi and combine collision near Fiske
Traffic along Highway 7 was slowed on Tuesday following a collision involving a semi-truck hauling heavy machinery and a combine.
The incident occurred near Fiske, though details on injuries or the cause of the crash have not been released. Both large vehicles were removed from the scene before traffic returned to normal.
A video shared on Skilled Truckers Canada shows dash camera footage of the collision, which appears to show the semi swerving into the combine. Authorities have not yet confirmed the circumstances leading up to the crash.
Eatonia community rallies around Eaton School with BBQ fundraiser
A community lunch in Eatonia has raised more than $1,100 to support student field trips at Eaton School.
The hamburger and hotdog lunch, held Sept. 9 as part of the Kindersley & District Co-op community lunches, brought in a total of $1,110.
Members of the school’s Student Representative Council (SRC) and School Community Council (SCC) were on hand to help serve food and drinks during the event.
The funds will go toward future school field trips for Eaton students.

Austin Lancaster changed his pleas from not guilty to guilty before his scheduled trial. He pleaded guilty to one count of assault causing bodily harm and one count of failing to comply with a probation order.

Yesterday, drivers fueled up with a purpose for the Co-op’s Fuel Good Day, an annual event now in its eighth year that donates 10 cents per litre of fuel to a local registered charity or non-profit organization. This year, Southern Plains Co-op is directing the funds to three local child care centers, Hillcrest Early Learning Centre in Estevan, Carlyle Cubs Learning Centre, and Oxbow Child Care Centre.

"Comparing August of this year to August of last year, when we look at crimes against persons, total violations were down slightly, 20 last year in August, 17 this year overall. When we look at crimes against property, it's slightly up, 39 in August 2024 to 48 this year."
