New trail, road repairs and ‘Rodeo Drive’ coming to Ponoka

Highway 53 corridor improvements begin this month.

The Town of Ponoka has partnered with Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors to begin extensive improvements and rehabilitation of Highway 53, between Highway 2A and 38 Street.

Construction is expected to begin after the Ponoka Stampede.

Planned improvements along the corridor include:

Dust flies and hearts buck wild at Airdrie Pro Rodeo

The Airdrie Pro Rodeo opens today, launching five days of competitions, concerts and family programming at the Airdrie Rodeo Grounds.

Running June 27 to July 1, the annual event includes pro rodeo performances, junior events, live music, a vendor marketplace, and Family Day activities in support of the Airdrie Food Bank.

Gates open at 7 p.m. Friday. A cabaret featuring Airdrie-based country musician Brandon Lorenzo is scheduled for 8 p.m. A $10 cover charge applies.

Cattle warning issued for Glenbow Ranch trails

Visitors to Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park are being advised to use caution on several trails due to cattle in the area.

As of June 23, a safety advisory is in place for Badger Bowl, Bowbend Trail, McPherson Trail, and the Tiger Lily Loop.

Cattle, including cows with young calves, are currently roaming these trails and may display aggressive behaviour, especially toward dogs.

COPP-RCMP charity golf tournament drives support for youth

The annual COPP-RCMP Charity Golf Tournament teed off Thursday in Portage la Prairie, continuing a long-running tradition that raises funds for local youth while showcasing strong community support for the Citizens on Patrol Program. 

Held under sunny skies, this year's event welcomed dozens of golfers, local sponsors, and volunteers. Everyone is working together to support a cause that benefits both safety and youth development in the region. 

Teen artist finds freedom in Strathmore

The Strathmore Library features an artist in its gallery each month.

For June, the featured artist is Yiling. Xu, who also goes by Vivian. Xu's exhibit features a range of her artworks displayed throughout the building, showcasing her talent across several mediums.

Xu moved to Strathmore nine months ago from Chongqing, China, to study at Strathmore High School.
