In recent weeks, HSC Children’s has seen an increase in the number of cases of RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) bronchiolitis – an infection of the small airways in the lungs. 

As patient numbers spike at the Children’s Hospital in Winnipeg, a medical officer for Southern Health-Santé Sud offers some information on respiratory viruses and ways to better protect those who are most susceptible. 

In recent weeks, HSC Children’s has seen an increase in the number of cases of RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) bronchiolitis – an infection of the small airways in the lungs. 

Richard Pelletier was successful in his bid for the leadership spot in the Rural Municipality of Ste. Anne. 

He was elected as Reeve with 373 votes on Wednesday compared to the 293 votes that were cast for incumbent Paul Saindon. 

The Economic Development Operating Committee has hired Michelle Bezditny as the new Director of Economic Development for Steinbach. 

“Michelle has demonstrated exceptional leadership and professionalism in leading the business operations at the Steinbach Chamber of Commerce and Eastman Immigrant Services for the last 5 years,” says Christine Beaumont, Chamber President. “She has played an integral role in the economic development pilot project leading up to and since its launch.” 

The S.R.S.S. is hosting an event this month to help students and the public learn about education and career options. 

Guidance Counsellor Michael Thiessen says presenters will be at the high school on October 13th.

The Fall Food Drive continues for one more day, collecting donations for Southeast Helping Hands. 

Ken Dyck says youth groups have been going door-to-door this week, picking up food donations from residents of Steinbach, Blumenort and Mitchell. He values the young volunteers and hopes that this experience will encourage them to continue to find ways to contribute to the community in such a meaningful way. 

A new garbage truck is costing more than what the City of Steinbach had anticipated. 

Council had $320,000 in the budget for the replacement vehicle and had to dip into a reserve fund to make the purchase. 

Councillor Damian Penner made the motion at a recent meeting to award the tender to Shu-Pak Equipment Inc. at a cost of $362,730. 

Recent frost has damaged some corn fields with Blumenort and Giroux areas being hit the hardest. 
 
Pioneer Hi-Bred Seed Rep. Marc Hutlet has toured some fields and says it appears those areas saw a killing frost while crops in other areas had mostly leaf damage. 

We can expect the new leader of D-Division to make a big push for more RCMP officers in Manitoba. 

“Recruitment and retention are a very high priority for us right now,” says Rob Hill. The Assistant Commissioner was recently named as the new Commanding Officer for Manitoba RCMP. 

Hill says the job market is very competitive right now and that means he will have to work hard to find new members who want to work in our province and retain employees who are already serving in Manitoba.
