One person dead following single vehicle rollover near Drumheller

One person is dead following a single vehicle rollover near Drumheller.

On Wednesday afternoon police were called to a crash on Highway 570 between East Coulee and Dorothy.

"Three local fire departments and EMS also attended," said RCMP in a release.

"Upon arrival, officers identified the driver as a 35-year-old male from Edmonton."

According to police, there were no other vehicles or people involved in the incident.

"The officers of the Drumheller RCMP send their deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased," said the release.

Shelter in place lifted in Rockyford after high-risk incident

A shelter in place issued for Rockyford residents was lifted Wednesday night.

Suspects were taken into custody.

An RCMP release said there is no danger to the public.

"Alberta RCMP would like to thank the public for their understanding and cooperation," said police.

Cougar sighting prompts warning from Town of Drumheller

A cougar has been spotted in upper Midland Provincial Park in Drumheller.

According to the town, the animal was seen crossing Highway 838.

Staff are advising residents to keep an eye out.

"Do not leave your children and or pets outside unsupervised. Avoid walking and hiking in the area," the town said in a statement.

"Cougars are active at all times of the day. If they enter open habitats and areas near humans, they typically do so when it is dark."

Burning restrictions in place as Rocky View County issues fire advisory

Rocky View County Fire Services has issued a fire advisory.

"This advisory represents a moderate fire risk and will remain in effect as long as conditions remain," the county said in a statement.

According to county staff, all burning and fireworks permits are suspended, and burning is banned — with the following exceptions:

Alberta UCP boot former cabinet minister from caucus over scandal criticism

Alberta's United Conservative Party says it has expelled former infrastructure minister Peter Guthrie from caucus over his repeated criticism of the government's handling of the health-care contract scandal.

Guthrie gave up his ministerial position in February over concerns about government contracts and has been sitting as a backbencher for his Airdrie-Cochrane riding.

His pushback against Premier Danielle Smith also led the caucus to suspend him from voting in caucus matters.

‘It feels awesome’: Wheatland County man wins $100,000 lottery prize

A Wheatland County man is $100,000 richer after winning on the March 14 Extra draw.

Don Dueck originally thought he had won just $10,000, according to a release from the Western Canada Lottery Corporation.

“I took it to the cashier and told them what I had won,” he said. “The cashier checked it and said, ‘You’d better add another zero, because you won $100,000.’”

Dueck said he was in shock.

“I phoned my wife and asked her if she was sitting down,” he laughed. “We’re very excited.”

When does street sweeping start in Drumheller?

Residents in Drumheller are being advised to watch out for street sweepers starting next week.

Work is scheduled to begin Tuesday, April 22, and will continue for about five weeks, weather permitting.

"Crews will follow a set route starting in Downtown/Lower Newcastle," the Town of Drumheller said in a release.

"Please help us by watching for signage, moving vehicles off the street when posted, removing curb ramps, and keeping debris off the road."

Bank of Canada holds key interest rate steady

Station staff will visit farmers across Wheatland County to deliver lunch during seeding season.
