A cougar has been spotted in upper Midland Provincial Park in Drumheller.

According to the town, the animal was seen crossing Highway 838.

Staff are advising residents to keep an eye out.

"Do not leave your children and or pets outside unsupervised. Avoid walking and hiking in the area," the town said in a statement.

"Cougars are active at all times of the day. If they enter open habitats and areas near humans, they typically do so when it is dark."

The town is asking residents not to approach, harm or feed the animal. Anyone who sees the cougar is urged to contact Fish and Wildlife at 403-297-6423 with a description of the location it was last seen.
