Canadian pride surges in face of Trump's tariff, sovereignty threats: Leger poll
A new poll suggests Canadians' sense of national pride has surged in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs and threats against the country's sovereignty.
The poll, conducted by Leger Marketing for the Association for Canadian Studies, says that the number of people saying they're proud to be Canadian has jumped from 80 per cent in November 2024 to 86 per cent this month.

Strathmore students compete in esports tournament
Students from several schools in Strathmore competed at the Bow Valley College Esports Arena earlier this month.
Around 75 students took part in the Alberta Scholastic Esports League Super Smash Bros. tournament, including kids from Strathmore High School, Crowther Memorial Junior High School, and Drumheller Valley Secondary School.
The tournament was through elimination rounds transcending age, as video games are considered by players a matter of skill over physical prowess.
What goes into running an ice resurfacer?
Anyone visiting the Strathmore Family Centre would have seen an ice resurfacer flooding the rinks between ice times, but what kind of work goes into running the machines?
According to facility manager Craig Dilts, it can take up to several months of training before an employee is allowed to flood the ice unattended.
"In order to get trained on it, you have to go through a program that we have. There are a few industry courses as well that our staff participate in."
How many tickets were given out for drivers not wearing a seatbelt in 2024?
Alberta RCMP is reminding residents to stay safe and wear a seatbelt.
Police in the province handed out 2,960 tickets for seatbelt-related offences in the province last year.
Police said the fine for not obeying the laws of the road is $162.

Chestermere closes ice surfaces following warm weather
The City of Chestermere has bid farewell to its beloved ice rinks for the season.
According to the city, warm weather has weakened the ice, which puts people's safety at risk.
"While the lake ice thaws and the sun works its magic, we’d like to share a simple reminder to stay off the ice, both on the lake, as well as the storm ponds across the community," wrote the city on its website.
The city also asks that parents talk to their children about the importance of ice safety.

Drew Gregory to host Nashville Night show to raise funds for Standard Community Hall
Drew Gregory is hosting an upcoming concert for a cause.
Gregory and several other country musicians will round up a few tunes for Nashville Night on April 11 to raise funds for the Standard Community Hall.
It's the sixth year that the show has been put on.
"People started to just kind of understand the format a little bit of it and enjoy coming out and listening to some music. It's been a cool thing to take part in," said Gregory.
What capital projects are in store for Chestermere in 2025?
Chestermere has several capital funding projects planned for this year.
"A capital budget is a plan for acquiring, maintaining, and replacing a municipality’s physical assets. It’s part of the annual budget and based on revenue projections," mentioned the city in a news release.
"An operating budget outlines spending on day-to-day operations, including employee salaries, utilities, and facility maintenance."
According to the city, it prepares a yearly capital plan and a 5-year plan.
