Strathmore Fire Department offers tips to stay fire-safe

It's Fire Prevention Month and the Strathmore Fire Department is offering free home safety inspections and smoke alarm testing for residents.

According to Eric Alexander, deputy fire chief, it's an important time to remind people about staying safe in their own homes.

"It's recommended that alarms are tested monthly. That's as simple as pressing the test button and making sure there is an audible alert when it is tested."

Alexander mentioned people should change the battery in their detectors every time they change the clock.

Countries come together for Alberta Culture Days in Strathmore

There were over a dozen different countries represented at the Alberta Culture Days celebration in Strathmore on Saturday (Sept. 28).

Hosted by Strathmore Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) in Kinsmen Park, the day started with brisk single-digit temperatures before warming up as the day went on.

The event featured live entertainment, plenty of food trucks, and over a dozen local vendors. On the stage as master of ceremonies was Kevin Littlelight, an Indigenous filmmaker and radio DJ.

Strathmore Greek restaurant hosts grand opening ceremony

Mama's Greek Kouzina held its grand opening celebrations over the weekend.

The event began on Saturday (Sept. 28) with a selection of snacks and a ribbon-cutting ceremony alongside Mayor Pat Fule. The event ran all day, even into their evening service.

"It went well," said Eleni Dellios, co-owner of the restaurant. "It was also during the Strathmore Third Avenue After Dark market, which brought many people to the grand opening. Everyone that dined with us in the evening also got complimentary cupcakes."

The Strike at the Port of Vancouver may be over, but we could see more disruptions to Canada's Supply Chain.

Late Friday, the Grain Workers Union Local 333 agreed to a tentative four-year deal with the Vancouver Terminal Elevator Association taking them through December 31, 2027.

The four-day strike involved over 600 workers at the six bulk grain export terminals at the Port owned by Viterra and Richardson International, G3, Cargill and Alliance Grain.

Western Grain Elevators Association noted that workers were back on the job Saturday morning.

Minimum wage in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario, P.E.I. increases

The minimum wage in four provinces is going up today.

Saskatchewan's minimum wage is going up by a dollar to $15, but it will still be the lowest in Canada, along with Alberta.

In Manitoba, the rate is going up by 50 cents to $15.80, a hike that follows a formula set in provincial law tied to the rate of inflation of the previous calendar year.

The rate in Ontario is rising by 65 cents to $17.20 an hour, an increase tied to inflation.

Canadian members of Parliament are working with their colleagues in Australia and New Zealand to try and convince their respective governments to jointly recognize Palestinian statehood.

NDP MP Heather McPherson, who is leading an effort to recruit Canadian MPs, said building on work the three governments have already done might be the best leverage to advance a two-state solution.

National ceremony in Ottawa marks Truth and Reconciliation Day

But amid the more difficult moments at the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation ceremony on Parliament Hill came a few moments of levity and celebration.

Tentative deal reached in Metro Vancouver grain strike, federal minister says

Canada's labour minister says striking grain terminal workers in Metro Vancouver and their employers have reached a tentative labour deal.

Steven MacKinnon announced the agreement between Grain Workers Union Local 333 and the Vancouver Terminal Elevators’ Association in a post on social media platform X, but provided no other details.

The union confirmed the tentative deal in a statement on Facebook, saying its members will conduct the ratification vote by Oct. 4.
