Harvest Sample Program back in swing as harvest continues across the prairies

Canadian farmers can take advantage of a program that can give them a leg up this harvest season through the Canadian Grain Commission's (CGC) annual Harvest Sample Program.

Through that farmers get an unofficial grading from the CGC which they can use to help market their commodities.

Program Manager of Analytical Services Kerri Pleskach talks about the program and how it helps out Canadian producers.

Calgary Flames staff remove memorial for Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau

Staff with the Calgary Flames removed a memorial for Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Monday morning.

According to the Flames organization, the team has ended a 13-day tribute period for the brothers.

The Gaudreau brothers were struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver named Sean Higgins while out for a bike ride on August 29.

Strathmore’s skies light up: residents capture breathtaking pictures

It was a beautiful weekend in Strathmore as residents captured pictures of the stunning northern lights.

The lights showed up during the early morning hours on Saturday (Sept. 14) and came out again in the early morning on Sunday (Sept. 15).

If you missed the display this weekend, they'll hit the sky and be visible after sunset on Tuesday morning (Sept. 17).

The aurora borealis is typically green, but you can also see bits of yellow, blue, red, pink, and purple hues.

Calgary woman wins $1 million from lucky lottery ticket bought in Brooks

A Calgary woman is now a millionaire thanks to a lucky lottery ticket.

Josephine Leduc bought the winning ticket at a Shell gas station in Brooks at 550 Cassils Road West.

“I checked my ticket on the Lotto Spot app and thought I won $1,000,” she said. “I checked the ticket again and thought it was $10,000.”

“My husband told me to count the zeroes,” she laughed. “Unbelievable. It’s just unbelievable.”

According to a news release from the Western Canada Lottery Corporation, Leduc plans to use the money to help her family.

Root Rot Network looking to eradicate prairie crop diseases

A new resource for farmers and researchers has been launched with the Root Rot Network covering advances in combatting diseases for crops in the prairies.

That includes both resources and research papers featured on rootrot.ca.

From haunts to parties: Strathmore Ag Society changes up annual Fright Night event

The Strathmore & District Agricultural Society has announced a few changes to the upcoming Fright Night event.

"We are switching things up this year with what we are calling Stampede Fright Night “Lite” because it is a new spin on our usual spooky Halloween fun," wrote the society on the Strathmore Stampede Facebook page. "There will be no Halloween haunts this year, but two great parties instead."

Poilievre to meet with caucus Sunday ahead of return of Parliament this week

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre will gather with his caucus on Parliament Hill today as he prepares to make another push to topple the Liberal government as early as next week.

The one-day caucus meeting ahead of the return of Parliament Monday will begin with a public address by Poilievre, who has maintained his party's commanding lead in the polls throughout the summer.

They are the last of the major parties to have a fall strategy session after the Liberals, NDP and Bloc Québécois all met last week.

MPs to face new political realities on their return to Ottawa

On Monday Parliamentarians will return to the familiar stone walls of West Block in Ottawa to find the political landscape has shifted significantly.

When they last gathered in the capital the Liberals knew their prospects were poor after languishing in the polls for more than a year, but they were secure in the knowledge the New Democrats would prevent them from toppling before they table the next budget, at least.

But the summer saw several seismic shifts that mean the government will now operate as a true minority that could fall to an election at any time.
