What are the province's next steps for photo radar on our roads and highways?

The Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors, Devin Dreeshan, confirmed that over the summer, Transportation and Economic Corridors engaged with municipalities and law enforcement to eliminate photo radar ‘fishing hole’ locations (defined by the province as areas where photo radar is focused on revenue generation rather than traffic safety). 

This news comes nearly one year after the government announced that it would work with municipalities and law enforcement to remove all fishing hole locations across the province. 

Update: Major collision west of Airdrie – Highway closed

A motor vehicle collision west of Airdrie and north of Cochrane that had previously closed down a portion of the highway has been cleared.

According to reports, the collision was on Highway 22 near Highway 567. Motorists were urged to use alternate routes as emergency crews were on the scene.

There is no word on injuries. However, STARS air ambulance indicated that they had been dispatched to an emergency call in the Cochrane area, though it is unclear if they are responding to the collision.

Three lives lost over long weekend as RCMP record 1,982 traffic offences

Alberta Mounties recorded 1,982 traffic safety infractions over the Labour Day long weekend (August 30 - September 2).

"Of the 1,982 tickets issued, 990 were for speeding, 35 for distracted driving, and 55 were issued for not wearing a seatbelt," RCMP stated. 

Additionally, 92 drug or alcohol-impaired drivers were removed from the roads.

"Unfortunately, due to road-related incidents, there were two fatal motor vehicle collisions resulting in three deaths," police added.

Update: Collision snarls traffic southbound on QEII

A previous motor vehicle collision southbound on the QEII near Crossiron Boulevard has been cleared.

According to 511 Alberta, the collision was approaching Stoney Trail Northeast. Motorists were warned of delays in the area.

There is no word on injuries or the cause of the collision.

1,124 speeding tickets last year—RCMP crack down again this long weekend

In 2023, 1,124 speeding tickets were issued by Alberta Mounties during the Labour Day long weekend, which prompted RCMP to issue a warning to motorists ahead of this year's long weekend.

"We will be out again this year working to keep people safe. I hope our reported numbers are much lower this year,” said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull of Alberta RCMP Traffic.

Speed and lane reductions north of Airdrie until end of September

Until September 30, motorists can expect traffic delays on Highway 581, near Range Road 11, just east of Carstairs, as culvert repairs will continue.

According to 511 Alberta, 30 kilometres an hour speed restrictions will be enforced, and lane closures will be in place, with one-lane alternating traffic. Passing will be prohibited, and temporary traffic signals will also be installed. The speed reductions and lane closures will be in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 

Temporary lane closures for one of Airdrie's busiest streets until the end of the month

Airdrie's Main Street will be a flurry of construction activity until the end of this month, with temporary lane closures over multiple days.

Until August 29, temporary road closures will occur on Main Street South to accommodate shallow utility construction activities. Then, beginning next week on Monday, until August 30, there will be temporary road closures of Main Street North for deep utility installation.

Rolling roadblock: Cylinder takes a tumble on QEII near Airdrie

On Monday afternoon, motorists were taken aback when they reported that a truck had lost a part of its load. This massive construction cylinder fell onto the highway on the QEII, northbound near Airdrie.

Though police did not attend the scene, and there appeared to be no injuries, motorists reported long delays and traffic congestion.

It is unclear how the incident happened and the truck's final destination.
