Update: Reports of two collisions make Airdrie traffic cumbersome on QEII

Motorists faced delays on the QEII, southbound just outside Airdrie’s city limits, as emergency crews responded to what traffic maps suggested may have been two collisions. Residual traffic delays are expected to continue.

According to 511 Alberta, the stretch of Highway 2 from Calgary city limits to the north of the Highway 2A junction was bare and dry. However, icy sections, slippery conditions, and blowing snow were reported on the shoulders, with icy wheel paths potentially affecting traction. Visibility remained good.

Airdrie RCMP: Friday morning propane truck rollover cleared

Airdrie RCMP has confirmed that the collision scene on Range Road 13 near Airdrie is now clear, and traffic can proceed. 

On Friday morning, RCMP responded to a propane truck rollover on Range Road 13, between Township Road 264 and Highway 566, just west of Airdrie city limits.

Crews worked to offload the propane, and RCMP stated there was no risk to the public. No injuries were reported. While emergency crews managed the scene, motorists were initially advised to avoid the area. 

Update: Multiple crashes reported on major highways; Airdrie motorists urged to drive with caution

Emergency crews responded to several motor vehicle collisions across the region as winter weather impacted driving conditions.

In Calgary, a northbound crash was reported on Deerfoot Trail near Beddington Trail NW, and motorists were advised to drive cautiously. Another collision occurred eastbound on Stoney Trail between 14 Street NW and Harvest Hills Boulevard N, causing delays.

Just after 4 p.m., Airdrie RCMP advised that the collision scene on Range Road 13 is now clear, and traffic can proceed.

Earlier, RCMP confirmed that a propane truck had rolled over on Range Road 13, between Township Road 264 and Highway 566, just west of Airdrie city limits.

Crews were on the scene working to offload the propane. RCMP stated there was no risk to the public, and no injuries were reported.

Motorists were initially advised to avoid the area, as traffic was blocked. They were then encouraged to take an alternate route.

Local fire department warns motorists: "Give us room to work, and please slow down"

​​​​​​Blowing snow and icy roads are creating dangerous driving conditions along the Queen Elizabeth II (QEII) Highway, prompting a warning from the Didsbury Fire Department.

Emergency responders are urging motorists to slow down and use extra caution as they deal with multiple collisions.

"With blowing snow and icy road conditions, please take extra caution if you have to travel today. Emergency personnel are dealing with collisions on QEII. Give us room to work, and please slow down," the Didsbury Fire Department stated on social media.

The mercury is expected to drop to -31°C by tonight, and the wind chill will make it feel like -40°C. Monday morning will bring no relief, with the same bitter wind chill before a slight warm-up to -13°C in the afternoon.
