Slippery conditions continuing on highways near Airdrie

A multitude of collisions around Airdrie in the early morning hours made the commute for some motorists very slow this morning.

Motorists are asked to continue to use extreme caution on the roads, as highways in and around Airdrie are slick and partly covered in snow and ice.

The QEII, Southbound towards Calgary City limits is reported to be slippery with icy sections, while heading North of Airdrie, similar conditions have been reported. It has also been reported that Junction Highway 72 towards Crossfield has packed ice and snow, with extremely slippery sections.

Update: Second morning collision on QEII near Balzac

A motor vehicle collision heading Northbound on the QEII near Highway 566, near Cross Iron Mills has been cleared. 

Earlier on Wednesday morning motor vehicle collision involving two semi-trucks and a passenger vehicle in the vicinity has been cleared, while a collision Southbound on Deerfoot Trail at Airport Trail has also been cleared

A collision Southbound on Deerfoot Trail at Airport Trail has been cleared.

Update: Northbound QEII collision South of Airdrie involving semi-trucks

A multi-vehicle collision heading Northbound on the QEII near Highway 566 in the vicinity of Balzac involving several cars has been cleared.

Eyewitnesses reported the collision involving two semi-trucks, with another passenger car in the ditch. 

Emergency crews were on the scene earlier this morning, but have since left. There is no word on injuries, however, road conditions have been reported to be icy. 

Collision on QEII cleared amidst ongoing snowfall warning

A motor vehicle collision Northbound on the QEII near Olds has been cleared. 

Highways around Airdrie continue to be partly covered with snow. The QEII heading Southbound towards Calgary is reported to be icy, with slippery sections, and there are possibilities of white-out conditions and drifting snow. Northbound QEII is also reported to be partly covered in snow. 

Update: Collision North of Airdrie on QEII

A motor vehicle collision Northbound on the QEII near Olds has been cleared. 

Highways around Airdrie continue to be partly covered with snow. The QEII heading Southbound towards Calgary is reported to be icy, with slippery sections, and there are possibilities of white-out conditions and drifting snow. Northbound QEII is also reported to be partly covered in snow. 

Heavy snowfall triggers warning

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a snowfall warning.

According to the warning, heavy snow will continue today, with total amounts of 10 to 20 centimetres.

"The heaviest snow will fall this afternoon and through the night. Snow will taper off Sunday morning. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow."

Motorists are reminded to prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. 

Update: Drivers warned of hazardous conditions around Airdrie

With snow continuing to fall, with five to 10 centimetres expected by the end of Saturday, motorists are reminded to remain vigilant on the roads.

The QEII Southbound towards Calgary City limits is reported to be partly covered in snow with icy sections, while North of Airdrie heading towards Crossfield and Carstairs, similar conditions have been reported. Heading east from Airdrie towards Beiseker, road conditions are slightly worse, with drifting and blowing snow reported.

Mounties warn of hazardous conditions north of Airdrie

Mounties said that there are multiple traffic incidents on the QEII between Bowden and Carstairs and they are asking motorists to use caution while driving. 

Earlier in the evening, there were several collisions, including an earlier collision heading Southbound on the QEII near Carstairs which shut down parts of the highway for several hours. The scene has since been cleared.
