'Missing part of its soul': Jasper residents take stock of wildfire destruction

When Alice Foubert entered her home in Jasper, Alta., for the first time since a wildfire roared into the community, the rancid smell from her fridge made it difficult for her to recognize where she was.

"It felt like a shell of home," the 25-year-old said in an interview Monday.

"My heart just sank. I'm used to my cats being in there to greet me but the streets were also pretty empty and it just didn't feel like home."

Foubert was among dozens of residents roaming the town Monday on foot, in cars or on bikes. Some were out walking pets.

'The water is safe': Water Treatment Plant Superintendent shares on process part 2

While Weyburn's tap water is less than ideal tasting currently due to the higher levels of algae in Nickle Lake, the Superintendent of Weyburn's Water Treatment Plant, Shabbir Sakrani, said their three-part process ensures the water is completely safe to drink.

Algae, he noted, is a natural growth process of a microscopic organism in all-natural surface water, depending on the temperature, salinity, and pH of the water.

Feds announce funding for Bioproducts Cluster

The Federal Government announced over $6.5 million on Monday for Bioindustrial Innovation Canada (BIC)  through the AgriScience Program.

Peter Fragiskatos, Member of Parliament for London North Centre, announced the funding on behalf of Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay.

"This funding underscores our commitment to advancing technologies that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase the value of Canadian agricultural products. Together, we are strengthening our agricultural sector and building a greener future."

Criticism of Charles Adler's Senate appointment includes federal cabinet minister

The appointment of longtime broadcaster Charles Adler to the Senate is being criticized in some quarters, including by a member of the federal cabinet.

Adler, who spent decades hosting talk-radio shows, was named to the Senate on the weekend by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and will represent Manitoba. 

Dan Vandal, the minister of northern affairs, has issued a brief one-sentence statement that says there are many Manitobans better suited to represent the province.

From Weyburn to Alaska: Braden Birnie enters his third year of college hockey

Braden Birnie is a former Weyburn Red Wings captain and is now in his third year of Division 1 NCAA college hockey with the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. The Weyburn native spent his minor hockey days playing for the U15 and U18 AA Weyburn Wings, then one year with the Regina Pat Canadians U18 AAA team before joining the Red Wings for 2 and a half years. Now playing in his third year in Alaska, transitions are never easy in hockey. 

'Unsettled weather expected to bring thunderstorms into the southeast

A couple of more days of severe storms are in the forecast for the southeast as the current system remains unsettled.

Over the weekend the system even brought a tornado warning along the Saskatchewan-Manitoba border, though Environment Canada says there were no reported touchdowns.

Meteorologist Terri Lang explains that the week will be active with high temperatures and storms inbound.

SCA tour highlights cattle operations in Saskatchewan

The Saskatchewan Cattlemen's Association gave some participants in this week's Canadian Beef Industry Conference a taste of Saskatchewan.

CEO Grant McLellan says this is the first time the event has been held in Saskatchewan and they're excited to welcome everyone here.

He says the sold-out tour involved several stops at cattle operations around Saskatoon.

The tour stops focused on rotational grazing, Longhorns and a Farm-to-Fork business, a Simmental operation with a solar watering system, and a fifth generation farm established in 1906.

Environment Canada issues severe thunderstorm watch

Conditions are favourable for a severe storm to pop up in the southeast according to a severe thunderstorm watch issued by Environment Canada.

In their release they expect the thunderstorm to last through the afternoon and evening.

That thunderstorm could produce strong winds, damaging hail, and severe rainfall.

They remind people to seek shelter if a thunderstorm is approaching and to keep an eye on the forecast.

Teamster's rail union announces 72-hour strike notice for Canadian railroads

The Teamster's Canadian Rail Conference (TCRC), a union representing members of both CN Rail and CPKC has given a 72-hour strike notice.

The Canada Industrial Relations Board set the date that strike action could occur as August 22, after finding that rail service was non-essential in Canada.

Earlier this month both CN and CPKC announced that they would be locking out employees on August 22, shutting down rail operations across Canada.
