One in four Canadians report being affected by extreme weather in last year: poll

Almost one in four Canadians were directly affected by extreme weather events over the past year, a new poll suggests.

The Leger poll — released as Canada copes with its second-worst wildfire season on record — says 23 per cent of Canadians who responded said they were personally affected by extreme weather events like heat waves, floods, fires and tornadoes over the last 12 months.

Three credit unions to merge after overwhelming support in member vote

Members of the Conexus, Synergy, and Cornerstone credit unions across Saskatchewan voted on the proposed merger of these institutions from June 3rd to 13th and results show overwhelming support in favour. 

Members from Conexus voted 87.5 percent in favour, with 86.5 percent in favour from Cornerstone, and 88.7 percent in favour from Synergy.  Board Chair for Conexus, Ken Kosolofski, says this was above and beyond the 75 percent minimum they needed to move forward.  

Life Centre Church to host second annual 'School's Out for Summer' party

Life Centre Church is gearing up for the first day of summer holidays for Weyburn's kids. The second annual School's Out for Summer Party will be held on Friday, June 27th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"Teachers are still actually working, but that's the morning I remember as a kid, you woke up and it felt different," shared Pastor Matt Erickson.

He said the entirely free event is 'come-and-go' just to help celebrate the start of summer holidays.

A Grade 6 student from Assiniboia Park Elementary School has taken her passion for history and science to new heights, finishing second at regionals and earning a spot at the National Virtual Heritage Fair. 

Victoria Roy’s project focused on a uniquely Canadian innovation: the cardiac pacemaker. Invented in 1949 by electrical engineer John Hopps, the pacemaker has saved countless lives, and, as Victoria discovered, even has uses beyond human medicine. 

Regional Park Pass lending program making Nickle Lake more accessible to all

With 20 Regional Park Passes available for library card holders to borrow from the Weyburn Public Library, getting into the gate at Nickle Lake Regional Park or any other Saskatchewan Regional Park is easy for anyone, regardless of their budget.

Park Manager Darren Wheeler said the passes look different, so they've been able to track how well-utilized they are over the past few seasons.

$3.4 million to support USask's Integrated Genomics for Sustainable Animal Agriculture and Environmental Stewardship Project

Canada's Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Heath MacDonald and Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Daryl Harrison today announced $3.4 million over four years to support the development of two new facilities at the University of Saskatchewan (USask) which includes the Omics Resource Centre at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) and Beef Reprotech facilities at the Livestock and Forage Centre of Excellence (LFCE).

Beavers drop 7-2 decision to Energy City at home

The Weyburn Beavers came up short Tuesday night at Tom Laing Park, dropping a 7–2 decision to the Energy City Cactus Rats in the first of back-to-back matchups between the two clubs. 

Coming off a tough weekend series in Saskatoon, the Beavers struggled to find their rhythm early and were never quite able to recover, committing five errors in the field and leaving seven runners on base.
