Southeast Saskatchewan gets a snowy wake-up call in April
A late-April snowstorm has blanketed areas throughout southeast Saskatchewan, causing travel disruptions and snow removal challenges in Arcola, Carlyle, and Kipling. With wet snow and slushy roads, residents and officials are urging caution on the roads.
In Arcola, Town Administrator Rebecca Korchinski shared her thoughts on the difficult driving conditions. “The roads, obviously, are going to be a little slick as it did rain before the snow, so I'd advise everybody to just take that extra time to get to work this morning,” she said.
Detours in place for Government Road closure
Work began today on Government Road between Coteau Avenue West and Coteau Avenue East for a service line installation
Crews from the City of Weyburn will be continuing the work again tomorrow.
Detours are in place along Mergens Street via Hill Ave to the west of Government Road and on Foster Street to the east of Government Road.
For the safety of workers on the site, the City is asking drivers to avoid the area if possible.

The occasional spring snowfall is not unusual for Western Canada, bringing additional moisture prior to seeding.
Parts of southern Alberta including areas around Calgary, Olds, Airdrie, Beiseker and Three Hills received another blast of winter over the weekend, with more snow overnight making travel challenging.
Meteorologist Drew Lerner with World Weather Inc says a significant snowstorm is going to continue to occur in the southeast part of Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba today with some other areas seeing some light snow or rain.
Torquay’s former mayor awarded SUMA Life Membership Award
Former Torquay mayor Mike Strachan has been honoured with a Life Membership Award from the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA), recognizing his 16 years of dedicated service and significant contributions to municipal politics at the provincial and national levels.
“It’s just something you don’t ever expect to be recognized for by your colleagues in the municipal sector,” Strachan said. “It’s pretty exciting.”

The Canadian Mental Health Association is preparing for this years Mental Health Week taking place from May 5th to 11th. Program director at the CMHA Weyburn Branch, Tasha Collins says this is the 74th annual Mental Health Week campaign and follows the theme ‘Unmasking Mental Health”.
“We're aiming to raise awareness about the significant impact that masking can have on mental health relationships as well as well-being. And they talk about masking as being when we hide and suppress our emotions, our personality traits, behaviours, or even symptoms from others.”
City launches resident survey as part of Aquatic Feasibility Study
An Aquatic Feasibility Study is being launched by the City of Weyburn to assess the next step in meeting the communities need for aquatic services. The city is calling for community input as part of this study.
According to a release sent by the City of Weyburn, the services of RC Strategies, a leading Canadian recreation and parks planning firm, has been retained to develop the study. It describes the study as a key part in ensuring “prudent and responsible decision making” given the significant municipal investment it will require.
Poilievre vows not to impose a home equity tax as Liberals, NDP talk health care
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is claiming the Liberals will impose a tax on Canadians' home equity if they're re-elected as the federal election campaign enters its final week.
The last day of advance voting in the general election saw federal leaders scattered across the country, pitching plans on homebuilding and health care.
Poilievre was in Toronto Monday afternoon speaking to an audience with CARP, the Canadian Association of Retired Persons. He was asked whether he would put any taxes on equity saved in Canadians' homes.
Government Road closures in place this week
The City of Weyburn has announced the closure of Government Road between Bison Avenue and Coteau Avenue. This due to a service line installation.
The closure will be in effect from April 22 to April 23. Traffic detours will be in place, however drivers are asked to avoid the area whenever possible for the safety of construction crews.
Holzmiller comments on new role as CEO and President of Southeast College
Jody Holzmiller has been officially appointed CEO and President of Southeast College, after serving in the interim role since July. She will step into the permanent position on May 1st.
Holzmiller brings a wealth of experience from her 20 years with the college, and the Saskatchewan college system.
“It is both a pleasure and an honour to have been given the opportunity to fill the interim role since July and now be awarded the permanent role as CEO. I think what I bring to the position is the experience and the knowledge of the Saskatchewan College system.”
