Radio stations across the province team up to support wildfire evacuees

The Saskatchewan Day of Caring is tomorrow, with radio stations across the province joining forces to support wildfire evacuees from the north.  

Content director for Golden West Broadcasting in Weyburn, Dara Currie, says while the event is important throughout Saskatchewan, it’s especially significant here in Weyburn. 

Province responds to wildfire evacuation criticism with new aid measures

In the wake of sharp criticism from Saskatchewan’s Ombudsman about delays and deficiencies in the government’s wildfire evacuation response, Premier Scott Moe announced new supports for displaced residents on Wednesday, while acknowledging the province must do more to help affected families. 

Deana Mainil recruited to Team Saskatchewan after performance at pickleball provincials

Weyburn’s Deana Mainil attended the Saskatchewan Provincial Pickleball Tournament in Saskatoon over the weekend, hosted by the Henk Ruys Soccer Center & Umea Courts. 

The event marked the largest sanctioned pickleball tournament in the province's history, with 380 athletes in attendance, playing on 18 courts. 

Rains, Roy Leslie

Roy Leslie Rains, late of Weyburn, SK passed away on June 9, 2025 at 78 years of age.

He was predeceased by his parents, Leslie and Minerva Rains, his wife, Judith Rains; son, Donn Rains; brother, Ron Sinclair; sister-in-law, Ann Rains.

Water use advisory issued for Weyburn following power outage

The City of Weyburn has issued an immediate advisory urging all residents and businesses to reduce water usage after a power outage at the Nickle Lake water intake severely impacted the city's reservoir capacity.

As a result of the outage, the city's water supply is now critically low. The City is asking everyone to immediately cut back on water consumption by postponing tasks such as laundry, dishwashing, and any other high-usage activities until further notice.

WFD respond to multi-structure fire at Navou trailer park

Residents of the Navou trailer park were woken early on Saturday morning to a structure fire involving two buildings. Deputy Fire Chief Mike Wock says crews dispatched to the scene were greeted by heavy fire. 

“The fire started on a vacant trailer. And with the weather conditions and the wind that evening, it extended over into an occupied trailer.” 

Wock explains the efforts of firefighters included protecting those nearby alongside fighting the blaze. He says they faced some challenges but ultimately quenched the fire.  

DRE utilized in impaired driving traffic stop

The Weyburn Police Service were called to a local gas station on Friday, after they reported an impaired driver. Police located the driver who was in control of their vehicle, however also displaying signs of drug impairment.  

Deputy Chief Shane St. John explains the driver was displaying strange behavioral signs of impairment.  

“When the police arrived, they of course observed impairment. Then they called for a drug recognition expert (DRE), one of our members.” 

Due to the signs displayed by the driver, they were detained while the DRE arrived.
