"Enjoy it while it lasts": Meteorologist on the heatwave

A heat wave has gripped Weyburn and the surrounding area over the past few days, with temperatures getting into the low- to mid-30s, something rarely seen in September.  

“We have an upper-level ridge over the prairies that is centred basically over in New Mexico,” explained Natalie Hasell. She is a meteorologist with Environment Canada. “The air associated to this ridge is kind of defined by these hotter conditions.”

It is an annual tradition that has seemingly grown in the more than 30 years it has taken place. 

The Weyburn Independent Riders got on their motorcycles of all shapes and sizes Saturday afternoon, and took a ride through the streets of Weyburn, with Santa Claus leading the way, for their annual Toy Run to benefit the Weyburn Salvation Army.  

Peter Nygard sentenced to 11 years for sexual assault convictions

Former fashion mogul Peter Nygard has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for his sexual assault convictions in Toronto.

His time behind bars will work out to 6.7 years after accounting for credit he received for time already spent in custody.

Nygard’s lawyer had argued for a six-year sentence, citing the 83-year-old’s age and poor health, while the Crown sought a sentence of 15 years.

Nygard was convicted of four counts of sexual assault last November but acquitted of a fifth count as well as one of forcible confinement.

From park plans to utility rates: Weyburn City Council meeting preview

The agenda for Weyburn City Council’s meeting tonight is a full one, with everything from reports to bylaws, to park proposals.  

The councillors will receive a number of regular reports to the council. This includes the building report, fire department report, public works report and water treatment report. Then, there will be four bylaws that are before the council, two of which are back for changes.  

More than marks: Celebrating community at the 7th annual semicolon tattoo event

The Canadian Mental Health Association's (CMHA) Weyburn branch is gearing up for its 7th Annual Semicolon Event in partnership with Under Your Skin Tattoos.

This event will happen on September 28th; the initiative aims to raise awareness for mental health and suicide prevention.

Tasha Collins, Program Director at CMHA Weyburn, shared the event's significance.

 "We run this event in September because World Suicide Prevention Day is September 10th. We run the Semicolon Awareness Event to raise awareness, promote mental health, and recognize that important day."

Justin Trudeau may be in for an earful as he meets with caucus in B.C.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau may be bracing for an earful from his caucus when Liberal MPs gather in Nanaimo, B.C. today to plot their strategy for the coming election year.

It will be the first time he faces them as a group since MPs departed Ottawa in the spring.

Still stinging from a devastating byelection loss earlier this summer, the caucus is now also reeling from news that their national campaign director has resigned and the party can no longer count on the NDP to stave off an early election.

Weyburn singer-songwriter Karissa Hoffart making her CCMA debut

Weyburn singer songwriter, Karissa Hoffart, is performing for the Canadian Country Music Association Awards (CCMA’s) next weekend in Edmonton Alberta.  

“It's a once-in-a-lifetime thing for sure. This is going to be my very first ever CCMA award show and award week that I'll be going to as an artist. It's just really an exciting experience to be able to perform and showcase my talents and bring them all the way from Weyburn.” 

Play for all: Accessible swing installed at Legacy Park

A wheelchair-accessible swing was recently installed at Legacy Park Elementary School. The swing was unveiled last Friday at the school, honoring a disabled student in their fifth-grade class.  

Part of the funding for the swing was from one of the Weyburn Credit Union Community Fund Grants. Other funding came from Access Communiations’ Children’s Charity Fund. 

The schools SCC hosted fundraisers to help with the cost of the swing, and Souris Valley Industries contributed to the cost of the concrete base.
