Wind warning in effect for Weyburn, much of southern Saskatchewan

A wind warning was issued for Weyburn and the surrounding area by Environment Canada early Thursday morning. The winds developed in the wake of a cold front that passed through southern Saskatchewan. 

Wind gusts are expected to increase throughout the day, getting upwards of 90 kilometres an hour at times, before starting to ease during the evening. The breeze will still be stiff overnight, though, with winds from the north gusting upwards of 40 kilometres an hour.  

Southeast College sees strong enrollment and expands supports for students

As the fall semester gets underway, Southeast College is reporting steady enrollment numbers and renewed excitement around its program offerings, despite ongoing discussions about rising tuition across the province.

Sheena Onrait, Vice President of Communication and Strategic Enrollment at Southeast College, said the institution has worked hard to keep tuition increases as modest as possible.

E. Bourassa & Sons has made a $10,000 'Golden Globe Nominee' contribution to the future Spark Cinema, under construction now thanks to the work being done by the Weyburn Theatre Community Service Cooperative.

Marketing Manager Allyson Van Roon said they had been working on finding a significant way to give back to the theatre project, and they were encouraged by Sandy McCormick of the WTCSC's newly formed fundraising committee.

Could farmers face another tariff?

It looks like India is thinking about implementing an import duty on yellow peas. 

India Pulses and Grains Association is concerned that an increase in yellow pea production in Canada and Russia could result in more imports.

They say ongoing imports have brought down prices, which could discourage Indian farmers from expanding their own pulse production.

The IPGA says in order to raise the price of yellow peas in the domestic market, they are calling on the Indian government to impose a 30 to 40 per cent import duty.

Poilievre calls on Liberals to scrap the temporary foreign worker program

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is calling on the Liberals to scrap the temporary foreign worker program, arguing it has caused an employment crisis among young Canadians.

"The Liberals have to answer why is it that they're shutting our own youth out of jobs and replacing them with low-wage, temporary foreign workers from poor countries who are ultimately being exploited," Poilievre told a news conference Wednesday morning in Mississauga, Ont.

"We want Canadian workers to have Canadian jobs. We want to bring back high wages."

Carney says his ministers are looking for ways to cut spending at cabinet retreat

Prime Minister Mark Carney and his cabinet will meet behind closed doors for a second day in a row today, as the Liberal government prepares for Parliament's return in a little under two weeks.

Cabinet is discussing efforts to spur industrial investment, refocus Ottawa's spending priorities for the coming fall budget and counter U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs.

The federal government is expected in October to table Carney's first budget since taking office.

'Smash Hit': Second annual Bengough Brawl Demolition Derby to take place later this month

Later this month, about 120 km southwest of Weyburn in the town of Bengough, destruction lovers and their cars will hit the track for the 2nd annual Bengough Brawl on September 20th. The Demolition Derby is put on by Palmer Automotive and the Palmer family in conjunction with the Southeast Demolition Club and numerous donations from the community. A demolition derby bringing a variety of cars and competitors will take over the Bengough Ag Society Fairgrounds for the chance at glory and cash prizes. Colton Dodd, organizer of the Bengough Brawl, explains the fun that’ll take place.
