Claude Caldwell, professor emeritus at Dalhousie University and a former federal researcher, said regional and rural-urban divides have developed that send mixed messages to politicians and negotiators, and he worries about upcoming trade negotiations.

Alberta invests $9.3 million in the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Diagnostic Services Unit

Alberta's livestock producers will benefit from increased funding for the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Diagnostic Services Unit. 

Agriculture and Irrigation Minister RJ Sigurdson says the government is investing $9.5 million over three years, with $3.5 million being allotted each year. The funding is earmarked for the continued development of a full-service veterinary diagnostic laboratory in Calgary. 

He says the province has been supporting this project since 2020 and has been closely monitoring its impact as it continues to grow. 

New faces, strong core: Beavers launch WCBL season at home Thursday

The Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) Weyburn Beavers return to Tom Laing Park this Thursday, officially kicking off the collegiate baseball season. 

Head coach for the Beavers Cam Williams says the team is excited to start the action. Players arrived in town yesterday from across Canada and the United States yesterday, on the tails of their college ball seasons.  

“Obviously a lot of guys had really good school ball years, but overall summer ball is just a different ball game to use the term. The guys are just really excited.” 

Deputy Minister of Advanced Education visits Southeast College Weyburn

Louise Michaud, Saskatchewan's Deputy Minister of Advanced Education, stopped by the Southeast College Weyburn Campus yesterday afternoon for a meet and greet with faculty and staff.

"I've had the good fortune to be able to go to Whitewood, Weyburn, and Estevan today, so absolutely, it's a fantastic journey meeting some amazing staff and seeing a lot of opportunity for students. I've been in the role for just under a year and this has been my first opportunity to come to this area."

A time and place: Salvation Army advise on responsible donating

The Weyburn Salvation Army is reminding the community of best practices when dropping off donation items. This after a mound of donations were left outside the building overnight.  

A post on the organization's Facebook page yesterday showed the pile of donations, stressing the importance of dropping off items during store hours. 

Community ministries worker, Nicole Strickland says donations should be deposited at the proper time and place, as it can otherwise cost them time and money to clean up. Store hours are Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. 

Regional Park Pass lending program returning to Weyburn Public Library

The Saskatchewan Public Libraries has announced the Regional Park Pass lending program will return this year. From June 16th to September 15th, 2025, Saskatchewan Library card holders can borrow a Regional Park Pass for up to seven days. The pass gives free access to nearly 100 Regional Parks throughout Saskatchewan.

The program was created through a partnership between the Saskatchewan Regional Parks Association and the Saskatchewan Library Association.

Hockey Weyburn's best and brightest acknowledged at annual awards night

Hockey Weyburn acknowledged the success and growth of their players this evening hosting their annual awards night. 

The night began with the Chris Mann Memorial Official Awards, chosen by the Referee in Chief and Mentor group.

Schwindt, Karen

Karen Schwindt, late of Pangman, SK passed away on March 11, 2025 at the age of 67 years.

She was predeceased by her father, Glen Svedahl; sister, Linden Svedahl; in-laws, Lorne and Mary Schwindt.
