May contract talks alarm sugar beet growers

Lack of progress means time is growing short to get a successfull crop into the ground in Southern Alberta.

Contract negotiations are dragging on for Alberta sugar beet producers.

It’s already early May, and Alberta Sugar Beet Growers and Rogers Sugar, the sole sugar-beet processing plant left in Canada, still haven’t hammered out a deal.

Jennifer Crowson, executive director with the Alberta Sugar Beet Growers, cautioned the Western Producer in an email that she was limited in what she can share, other than that they are still in active negotiations.

And the winner is...: 2025 Weybex Awards

The 2025 Weybex Awards took place at McKenna Hall on Friday night, celebrating the businesses that impact the community of Weyburn. Hosted by the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce, they handed out six different awards throughout a variety of categories, ranging from a New or Expanding Business Award for the young businesses all the way to the Business Hall of Fame recognizing those who've pioneered business in Weyburn. Monica Osborn, executive director with the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce, comments on the fantastic night. 

Open house showcases vision for revitalized downtown Weyburn

The City of Weyburn hosted an open house today inviting community feedback on drafted concepts for downtown revitalization. 

The city has partnered with Crosby Hanna & Associates, a Saskatchewan-based Landscape Architecture and Community Planning firm, to showcase the draft conceptual plans to revitalize Weyburn’s Downtown Core. 

Director of Engineering for the city, Renee Cugnet, says the event went well, seeing a strong turnout and plenty of feedback. 

Prime Minister Mark Carney to unveil his new cabinet on Tuesday

Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to unveil his new cabinet at Rideau Hall on Tuesday — and it's expected to be a slimmed-down front bench meant to signal a more businesses-minded approach to government.

Rideau Hall confirmed the timing of the swearing-in ceremony on Friday.

Marci Surkes of the government relations firm Compass Rose Group said Carney will seek to draw a sharp contrast between his government and that of former prime minister Justin Trudeau, and about one-third of the new cabinet could be new faces.

McHappy Day in Weyburn raises more than $6,000 for RMHC

The 31st annual McHappy Day was held yesterday, a one-day fundraiser organized by McDonald's Canada and its independent franchisees, directing a portion of proceeds from all food and beverage menu items to Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) and other local children’s charities.

The community of Weyburn and area helped to raise $6,490 in just one day!

Farrokh Javanmardi, Manager of Weyburn's McDonalds Restaurant, said this was an outstanding success.

Weyburn gymnast stands out at competition

The Airbourne Gymnastics team delivered great performances at a Moose Jaw Competition held on April 25th.

In a press release, the club said Weyburn should be proud of the showcase of talent and dedication at the event, which had athletes from various age groups and levels competing. 

One athlete, in particular, stood out with the performance of her exceptional skills. Mackenzie Pulfer, a 16-year-old gymnast, placed First overall in her age category competing as an Xcel Platinum athlete. 

Bourassa, Germain Antoine

Germain Antoine Bourassa, late of Kisbey, SK passed away on May, 7, 2025 at the age of 71 years.

He was predeceased by his parents, Horace Bourassa and Yvonne Bourassa-Hebert; step father, Lou Hebert; brother, Laurent (Cathy) Bourassa, brother-in-law, Brian Lyttle; father-in-law, Wallace Haywahe; and his nephew, Doug Bourassa.

Weyburn High School Rodeo goes this weekend

The Weyburn High School Rodeo is going this weekend at the Weyburn Agricultural Society's Exhibition grounds, with junior division competitions beginning at 8 a.m. and senior division competitions beginning at 12:30 both Saturday and Sunday.

Nicole Kmita said there are 188 competitors from across the province this year, from Grades 7 to 12.

Archbishop of Regina reflects on new Pope, Leo XIV

A new Holy Father of the Roman Catholic Church has been appointed in Rome and has taken the name of Leo XIV. We spoke with Donald Bolen, Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Regina, to get his reaction.  

The new pope is Robert Francis Prevost, an American from Chicago who spent many years as a bishop in Peru, where he also holds citizenship.   

Southeast continues to see decline in unemployment rate

Southeast Saskatchewan’s unemployment rate in April fell to its lowest point since November 2024, according to the latest data from Statistics Canada. The Labour Force Survey results released Friday morning show the unemployment rate for the Regina-Moose Mountain Economic Region, which includes Weyburn and Estevan, was 5.1 per cent. This was a drop from 5.5 per cent in March, and down substantially from April 2024, when the unemployment rate was 6.8 per cent.
