Weyburn Red Wings

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings close out the regular season Monday night, as they welcome the Estevan Bruins to town. While the game won’t have a lot of impact on the standings, it will have a lot of importance thanks to the Highway 39 Cup, a wager between the police chiefs of Weyburn and Estevan, and the pride of both teams when it comes to the season series.  

With Saturday night's game against the Estevan Bruins postponed due to the weather conditions, the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings had ice time booked at Crescent Point Place, but no one to play against. The Red Wings would find an opponent, albeit a rather unconventional one - the U11 AA Panther Drilling Wings. 

The final regular season game for the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings is postponed due to the weather.

The Red Wings were to take on the Estevan Bruins at Crescent Point Place Saturday night. However, a blizzard that made its way through the southeast put the game on hold.

There is no word at this time if or when the game will be rescheduled, as the results won’t have an actual impact on the standings, and it was the final regular season game for both teams.  

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings handed out their year end awards Friday night, honouring some of the best achievements by the players throughout the season.

The biggest honour of the night was presented as the last award – Most Valuable Player. Who the recipient of that award would be was perhaps one of the worst kept secrets in Weyburn, as this player had already been nominated as the league’s most valuable player. The recipient – Ryley Morgan.

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings are back to .500 after picking up a 6-4 win on home ice over the Notre Dame Hounds Thursday night. The Wings were led by Jakob Kalin, who scored two goals, and Mi-Kwan Tallman, who added a goal and three assists in the victory.

Kalin got the goal scoring started just 4:08 into the game when he put the puck past Notre Dame netminder Johann Tremblay-Kau. He was assisted on the goal by Nolan Henderson and Tallman. From there the Red Wings continued to pepper Tremblay-Kau with shots, but he turned the other 16 shots he faced away.

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings now know who they will be facing in the SJHL playoffs, after falling 6-3 to the Humboldt Broncos Wednesday night. With the loss, the Red Wings will finish 8th overall in the SJHL, as they won’t be able to finish the season with more than 57 points. This means the Wings will open the playoffs against the Battlefords North Stars when the SJHL postseason begins.

Dazza Mitchell put on a goaltending clinic this past weekend in Kindersley and ended up receiving honours for his efforts from the SJHL. The second-year goalie for the Red Wings was named the SJHL’s Goaltender of the Week after putting together two wins, including his first-ever shutout in the SJHL. 

Over the course of the two games, Mitchell stopped 56 of the 58 shots he faced. This gave him a goals-against average of 1.00 for the two games, and a save percentage of .966.  

Dazza Mitchell made 28 saves to record his first-ever SJHL shutout, and Mi-Kwan Tallman scored his first goal since returning to the lineup as the Richardson Pioneer skated to a 2-0 win over the Kindersley Klippers Sunday.

With the win, the Red Wings now have a magic number of just one to secure a playoff spot, and remain four points back of the Nipawin Hawks for 7th place, with one game in hand.

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings got back into the win column Saturday night, ending their four-game losing skid. They would pick up a 3-2 win in overtime over the Kindersley Klippers.

With the win, the Red Wings moved slightly ahead of the Notre Dame Hounds, expanding the difference to seven points. The Wings also closed in slightly on the Nipawin Hawks, who are in seventh place with 55 points. Weyburn is currently holding down 8th place with 51 points and a game in hand.

The SJHL announced the finalists for their year-end awards Friday morning, and one Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings is being considered for the league’s Most Valuable Player. The nominees for the league’s year-end awards were voted on by coaches and media from across the league.
