Weyburn Red Wings

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings opened up the preseason for the 2023-24 season Tuesday night, hitting the highway to take on the Yorkton Terriers. The Red Wings would rally back after an early deficit, winning 3-2 in a shootout.  

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings are putting out the call for volunteers for the upcoming season. With that in mind, they are holding a volunteer night this week.  

A goal by Sutton Verot with 1.3 seconds remaining would be the difference maker, as Team Red beat Team White in the Eric Calibaba and Friends Memorial Red & White Game Sunday night. The game was the final part of the 2023 Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings training camp, which started Friday morning.

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings will open up training camp for the 2023-24 season on Friday morning. There will be 80 players, across four teams, competing for spots on the historic franchise.  

One of the returning players from last season is Braigh LeGrandeur. Known for being a sparkplug in the lineup, he has been gearing up for this weekend. 

The Board Members for the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings were delighted to share news from the previous hockey season during their latest AGM last night at the Ramada Hotel. After some brief housekeeping items, Head Coach Cody Mapes delivered the first presentation virtually while on vacation with his family. 

Preparations for the upcoming hockey season are currently underway and the Weyburn Red Wings announced a big trade this morning. 

The Red Wings announced that they have traded Ty Mason’s CJHL rights to the AJHL Bulldogs. In return, they acquired Tyler Teasdale, Ty Russell and future considerations.  

Mason, a hometown boy, has been a mainstay for the Weyburn Red Wings and Weyburn Minor Hockey throughout his career. He will be heading to the Blackfalds Bulldogs. 

Coming off a strong season, the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings are gearing up for their annual general meeting next week to talk about the successes both on and off the ice.  

Weyburn’s Braden Birnie, who just wrapped up his freshman year with the University of Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks, received national honours this week. He was one of seven members of his team named to the American Hockey Coaches Association All-American Scholar Program.  

The former captain of the Weyburn Red Wings, who is majoring in Business Administration, finished up his first year at the university with a GPA of 3.89, and his GPA in the past term was 3.93. 

The hustle and bustle of the regular season for Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings head coach Cody Mapes may be over, but it quickly gets replaced by the hustle and bustle of the off-season. That includes recruiting, scouting, league meetings, scheduling meetings and more.  

The SJHL held their annual draft Thursday night. The draft included six rounds of picks for those who are 2007 born, and two rounds of picks for those who are 2008 born.
