Federal health minister to write to provinces seeking agreement on new health deal

Federal Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos will ask the provinces today whether or not they intend to accept the new health-care funding deal tabled by the prime minister.

Duclos and Mental Health and Addictions Minister Carolyn Bennett are to write to the provincial health ministers seeking some clarity on their positions.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the premiers met in Ottawa Tuesday where he presented an offer that would see transfers to the provinces rise by $196 billion over the next 10 years.

Cereals Canada announces new Habitat Friendly Winter Wheat Ecolabel Program

Cereals Canada, Ducks Unlimited and prairie winter wheat producer groups have created the Habitat Friendly Winter Wheat Ecolabel Program to encourage winter wheat acreage.

Leif Carlson, the director of market intelligence and trade policy at Cereals Canada, says Ducks Unlimited research has shown that ducks that nest in winter wheat stubble are 24 times more successful than those that are nested in spring-planted cereals.

Strathcona County woman arrested for sexual abuse of a toddler

A Strathcona County woman has been charged with sexual abuse of a toddler after a tip from the FBI.

Police caught wind of the abuse after the arrest of Brian Davis in Yuba City, California. After his arrest, investigators discovered that he was speaking to a woman somewhere in the Edmonton area.

According to ALERT's Internet Child Exploitation unit, the chat logs between Davis and the woman showed sexual abuse of the woman's child.

Two Fort Saskatchewan hockey stars share an interesting childhood connection 

Two of Fort Saskatchewan's finest hockey players share an interesting childhood history. 

At one point in time, both Olen Zellweger and Colton Dach were the same class together at Our Lady of Angels. 

The two NHL draft picks were taught by Nikki Brouwer at the time. She now teaches a grade two class at Holy Redeemer in Ardrossan. 

"I remember teaching them, I taught them grade six," said Brouwer. 

Their love of hockey was evident from a young age, but Brouwer says that didn't stop the pair from also being model students.

Strathcona County RCMP use GPS to track stolen truck

Strathcona County RCMP worked alongside Edmonton Police (EPS) to track down a stolen truck.

Late last week, EPS contacted Strathcona County RCMP about a 2021 GMC Sierra that was stolen earlier that morning. The truck's GPS tracked the vehicle to Sherwood Park.

RCMP located the vehicle and followed it into a Superstore parking lot on Baseline Road. Two suspects were arrested with the assistance of police dogs.

The suspects, 41-year-old Jeffrey Lukala, and 31-year-old Jessica Gehman, both Edmonton residents, also had arrest warrants based out of the city.

Strathcona County excited to bring $720 million facility to the region

It's been a bit over a week since Imperial Oil announced that they would move forward with a $720 million investment in Strathcona County. 

Imperial Oil's plan is to build Canada's largest renewable diesel facility at their current Strathcona location with production slated to start in 2025. 

The county is ecstatic about the development. 

G3 helps fund CASA's "BeGrainSafe" program

G3 is renewing its support of the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA).

The company is committing $50,000 to CASA in 2023, maintaining G3’s position as a top sponsor and Safety Champion of the BeGrainSafe program.

CASA’s BeGrainSafe program raises awareness of the risks of becoming trapped in grain, trains firefighters in rescue techniques, and makes available specialized grain rescue equipment to rural fire departments.
