Man wanted by Morinville RCMP arrested

A man that had a warrant out by the Morinville RCMP has been arrested. 

In a release, Alberta RCMP says that on Monday (Jan. 30) The Western and Central Alberta District Crime Reduction Units teamed up to search for 49-year-old Neil Gow, a resident of Evansburg. 

As a result of the partnership, RCMP reported that they had located Gow driving a stolen vehicle and, with the help of Edmonton Police, executed a search warrant at an Edmonton residence. 

Gow was then arrested and charged with the following: 

Former Alberta premier Jason Kenney accepts role in Calgary advising law firm

Jason Kenney, more than three months after stepping down as Alberta’s premier, has landed a new role as a Calgary-based adviser in law firm Bennett Jones.

Kenney, who is also a former federal cabinet minister, will work in the public policy group.

Kenney says on Twitter he looks forward to the new job and that his work won’t include lobbying the provincial government or its agencies.

He says Alberta’s ethics commissioner has signed off on his new role and Kenney says he won’t be accepting any other jobs without first checking with the commissioner.

Sherwood Park ringette coach among the best in Canada

Sherwood Park is home to one of Canada's greatest ringette coaches. 

Lorrie Horne's story doesn't start in Sherwood Park, but rather on a farm east of Olds where she grew up and first gained a liking for sports. 

"We ran 3000 heads of cattle, rode horses, [we were] real McCoy cowboys," said Horne. "The neighbour, Raymond, his boys were playing hockey...we were bantam age, so the boys were starting to grow, and my teeth were right at that elbow level."

Tofield RCMP looking for stolen church bell

Tofield RCMP is looking for the public's help to identify a person involved in a theft late last month.

On January 22, police responded to reports of theft and mischief at the St. Mary's Ukrainian Church near Holden. When RCMP arrived, they discovered the building was damaged and the church bell was missing.

Security footage shows an older blue Dodge truck followed by a white SUV or van dragging the church bell behind.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Tofield RCMP or Crime Stoppers if they wish to remain anonymous.

Saying goodbye to Fort Saskatchewan's home decor hub

After almost three years in Fort Saskatchewan, The Barn Door is closing.

"Unfortunately, though, some good things must come to an end." said owner Jackie Switzer on a Facebook post where she announced the closure.

The Barn Door came to Fort back in early 2020 as Switzer's passion project. The store sells a variety of home decor in several styles.

"I sell vintage, I sell furniture, candles, Christmas, lotions, pillows, you name it, we probably have it here," Switzer said.

Former Tory interim leader, longtime Manitoba MP Candice Bergen stepping down

Former Conservative interim leader and longtime Manitoba member of Parliament Candice Bergen has announced she is stepping down. 

Bergen said in a video posted to Twitter that she submitted a letter of resignation as the representative for Portage-Lisgar after meeting with her party's caucus. 

The MP said last September, after serving as interim leader of the party following the ouster of former leader Erin O'Toole, that she was not planning to run in another federal election.

Former Fort Sask FedEx driver stars in locally filmed movie

A Sherwood Park native and former Fort Saskatchewan FedEx driver has brought some movie magic back to his hometown.

Marcus Rosner has been acting and producing made-for-TV romance films for the last decade. In his newest project, he wanted to film a movie where he grew up.

The film, From Italy with Amore, features several spots in Sherwood Park and Edmonton, including the Old Strathcona Farmer's Market, the Muttart Conservatory, and a restaurant called Vicky's Bistro.

What is the unemployment rate in Fort Saskatchewan?

It's been a tough few years for Canadians in terms of employment. 

The pandemic hit the market hard and caused many to either leave their jobs or go through layoffs. So, how did Fort Saskatchewan handle these tough last few years? 

Well, a quick look at some of the most recent Canadian censuses shows a few interesting statistics. 

In 2021, in the middle of the pandemic, Fort Saskatchewan had a total of 14,690 people in the labour force. Of those people, 1,575 were unemployed, which gave Fort Saskatchewan an unemployment rate of 10.7 per cent. 

New wheat crop trade and technical missions return with in-person sessions

Cereals Canada was finally able to resume its annual New Wheat Crop Trade and Technical Missions after a two year pause. 

During December and January four delegations travelled to 15 countries including Asia, Latin America, Europe, Africa, and the Gulf Region.

The chief executive officer for Cereals Canada, Dean Dias says over the past two years their team has done an excellent job presenting the information to customers in an online-only format.
