Spring wheat acres expected to increase in 2023

When it comes to supply and demand for wheat, demand has outstripped supply for the past couple of years.

Chuck Penner with LeftField Commodity Research says with the strength in demand, we've seen an increase in prices.

The price rally was accelerated by the drought and most recently by the war in Ukraine.

In terms of major exporters, he says, Canada bounced back while there was a drop from other key exporters.

'He would do anything for anybody' remembering Michael Dubreuil

An important member of the community is being remembered.

The town of Gibbons announced the passing of their assistant chief administrative officer Michael Dubreuil after a battle with cancer.

Dubreuil was born on December 17, 1976 in Flin Flon, Manitoba. After attending college in Winnipeg he explored different careers until settling down as the recreation director in Flin Flon.

He dedicated his time in that position to growing and developing recreation facilities in his hometown.

Poor visibility conditions expected to last much of the week

Road conditions have not been ideal in the Fort Saskatchewan area, and they may be similar for the rest of the week.

Foggy weather and poor air quality were reported in the region on Monday (Jan. 9) night and things seem to have intensified on Tuesday morning with visibility reaching zero on some parts of nearby highways.

One resident on a local Facebook forum said it made their commute out of the city much more hazardous.

"I left the fort at 5:10 am and it was crazy, it got thicker as I got to work by Stony Plain!"

Olen Zellweger reflects on World Junior gold

It's been quite a week for Fort Saskatchewan's Olen Zellweger.

The 19-year-old defender is coming off a gold medal win with Team Canada at the 2023 World Junior Championships in Halifax last Thursday and, on Sunday night, was the centrepiece in a massive WHL trade that saw him move to Kamloops from Everett.

If hearing about Zellweger winning a gold medal with Canada sounds familiar, it's because this is the third time since 2021 that he's done it. Those medals include two at the U20 World Juniors and one at the U18 World Junior event.

Iconic Alberta lake is now closed to vehicles

If you want to visit Moraine Lake in 2023, you'll have to take a bus, bike or hike it.

Moraine Lake Road is now closed to personal vehicles year-round.

Parks Canada says their shuttles, Roam Public Transit and tour buses will only be allowed from June to mid-October.

According to the Government of Canada, traffic flaggers had to work 24 hours a day to manage the parking lots. They say that during the peak period over the summer of last year, the parking lot remained full for nearly 24 hours a day.

Transport committee wants to hear from passengers affected by holiday travel chaos

A parliamentary committee voted Monday to launch a study into the causes behind Canada's chaotic holiday travel season and to hear not only from industry giants, but also from some of the passengers who saw their plans upended.

Members of the federal transport committee met to discuss the scope of the study, which all agreed was necessary given the widespread disruptions that plagued thousands of passengers who travelled by air and train last month and into January.

Special air quality statement for Fort Saskatchewan area

Environment Canada has released a special air quality statement for Fort Saskatchewan and the surrounding area.

In a release on Monday (Jan. 9) afternoon, Environment Canada says stagnant weather conditions are causing pollutants at the surface to build up. This is creating poor air quality.

Poor air will persist throughout the week.

Symptoms one might experience include increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches, and shortness of breath. Children, seniors, and those with asthma are especially at risk.

What to know about going to a clinic or to a hospital

A new Fort Saskatchewan walk-in clinic at the Westpark Shoppers is helping cut down wait times for people seeking healthcare.

Yet, there is still some confusion about what constitutes a visit to the hospital as compared to a visit to the clinic.

So, what can the pharmacist-led clinic do to help, and when would you have to go to a hospital instead?

Raj Bharadia, a pharmacist with the new clinic, says that there is no easy answer.

"Every patient case is so specific and different from each other," Bharadia said.

New gas station and restaurant coming to Fort Saskatchewan

Residents living on the south side of Fort Saskatchewan noticed a developing building with a familiar exterior.

In a post made to the Fort Sask Informed Facebook page, a resident shared an image of the new development on 130 Southview Way, comparing it to a picture of the A&W on 88th Ave.

"Looking at the design on the front of this new building, I am suspecting it’s a new A&W," Mike Bennett wrote in his post to Fort Sask Informed.
