A local football player is checking out his prospects.

Aaron Parker has already accomplished some impressive feats in his short career. About three years ago, Parker made the switch from hockey to football and fell in love with the sport instantly.

He plays for the Tier 1 Bev Facey Falcons and has won a bantam championship with the Fort Saskatchewan Falcons. Most recently, Parker was voted as the defensive player of the game at the gold medal game at the Canada Cup held in Kelowna, British Columbia.

Fort Saskatchewan Eyecare burglary results in charges being laid

Charges have been laid following a break-and-enter to a Fort Saskatchewan eye clinic.

On Monday (Aug. 15), RCMP responded early in the morning to a break-and-enter in progress at Fort Saskatchewan Eyecare (101 Street and 86 Avenue).

Three suspects were caught on camera filling bags with glasses and then leaving out the back door into an early model import-style SUV. Approximately $50,000 worth of designer eyewear was stolen.

Fort Saskatchewan Chamber executive director Tamara Dabels steps down

Tamara Dabels is leaving the Fort Saskatchewan & District Chamber of Commerce.

For the last five years, the chamber’s executive director has helped Fort Saskatchewan’s business community adapt, and navigate various regional changes and challenges.

Dabels will move on at the end of this month -- she accepted a position as branch manager of ATB Financial in Lamont.

80 years after Dieppe, postcards share stories of soldiers who died in deadly raid

Paris Eakins was 26 years old when he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in November 1940 during the Second World War.

He was born in Minnedosa, Man., where he lived until he attended the University of Manitoba, graduating with a bachelor of arts degree. Eakins worked at his town's newspaper and went on to join the sports department at the Winnipeg Free Press. 

After he enlisted, Eakins worked his way to become a pilot officer in a fighter squadron based in England in 1941. The next year, he was killed in northern France during the disastrous Dieppe Raid. He was 27. 

Canola Council of Canada unveils new program offering financial support to help growers initiate or advance 4R Nutrient Stewardship

The Canola Council of Canada (CCC) has unveiled a new program offering financial support to help growers initiate or advance 4R Nutrient Stewardship on canola acres.
 
The program, named Canola 4R Advantage, will reimburse growers for up to 85 per cent of eligible costs, up to $12,000 per farm per year. Funding for Canola 4R Advantage has been provided by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada through the Agricultural Climate Solutions – On-Farm Climate Action Fund (OFCAF).
 

Slowing inflation not enough to prevent September interest rate hike, economists say

Inflation in Canada finally appears to have peaked, but it nonetheless remains too high to dissuade the Bank of Canada from raising interest rates significantly in September, economists say. 

The year-over-year inflation rate slowed to 7.6 per cent in July, Statistics Canada reported Tuesday, with the deceleration largely driven by a decline in gas prices even as prices for food, rent and travel continued to rise.

Heat warning in effect for Fort Saskatchewan and area

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for the Fort Saskatchewan area this week.

Temperatures are expected to reach near 30 C on Thursday and Friday with temperatures cooling down to mid to high teens in the night. 

High temperatures pose a risk of heat stroke, heat rash, or heat exhaustion, which may be life threatening. Residents can prevent these symptoms by keeping hydrated and staying cool.

The temperatures are expected to cool off for the weekend.

Linden farm couple up for national environmental stewardship award during CCA Semi-Annual meetings

The National Environmental Stewardship Award (TESA) is being presented tonight as part of the Canadian Cattle Association's Semi-Annual Meetings in British Columbia.

TESA recognizes producers who go above and beyond standard industry conservation practices, and set positive examples for other cattle producers and the general public.

Producers are nominated at a Provincial level with the winners moving on to the National Award with this year's nominees representing B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes.

Sky Hy Pizza hoping to reopen soon after nearby fire

Sky Hy Pizza and Donair hope to reopen their doors after a nearby fire. 

At around 2:44 a.m. on Sunday (Aug. 14), police and the Fort Saskatchewan Fire Department responded to a structure fire on 99 Avenue and 104 Street. 

Fort Smiles Dental and Kids Fort Child & Out of School Care were both destroyed in the blaze -- no injuries were reported. 

The popular restaurant is located in the strip mall next to where the fire occurred. While there was no physical damage to their eatery, the power was out for an extended amount of time. 

Mounties debunk myths about reporting missing persons

The Missing Persons Unit of the Alberta RCMP is dispelling myths about filing a missing person report.

Police want people to remember that there is no defined time frame in which you need to wait before filing a missing person report. A search can begin as soon as the police are alerted.
