People trying to access damaged Highway 15 pedestrian bridge causing issues for city, RCMP

The Fort Saskatchewan RCMP wants to remind the public that the pedestrian bridge over Highway 15 is still closed. 

Access to the bridge has been restricted since a semi tractor-trailer hauling a large boom hit the structure on July 21.

Since the closure, Fort Saskatchewan city employees have had to fix the boards obstructing the bridge's entrance "numerous" times, according to police. 

Sherwood Park baseball player Liam Teierle selected for elite tournament

A Sherwood Park baseball talent is on his way to a prestigious tournament. 

Baseball has ruled Liam Teierle's world for most of his life. The Sherwood Park teenager picked up the bat ten years ago and never turned back. Now, at the age of 14, he has been selected to compete in the 2022 Zone Championships in Strathmore and Cheadle. 

“I felt excited about playing for them, this is my first time playing for Zones, so this is going to be a fun tournament,” he said.

Canadian veterans in France to mark 80th anniversary of disastrous Dieppe Raid

Canadian flags hang alongside French and British on the streets of Dieppe, France, each August as the city marks the anniversary of an important and disastrous day during the Second World War. 

Eighty years ago today, more than 5,000 Canadian soldiers were sent onto the beaches in an attempt to breach the occupied town from the sea.

Among them was 20-year-old Gordon Fennell, a member of the Calgary Tanks regiment, who has returned this week to commemorate the battle in which more than 900 Canadians died.

Motorcycle rider seriously injured in Highway 16 collision

A motorcycle rider was seriously injured in a Strathcona County collision. 

On Wednesday (Aug. 17) at 7:35 p.m., Strathcona County RCMP and Strathcona County Emergency Services responded to a collision at Highway 16 and Range Road 213. 

Police say a van made a left turn onto Highway 16 westbound from Range Road 213, and a motorcycle was traveling eastbound on Highway 16 when the collision occurred. 

Local football player Aaron Parker tackling his goals

A local football player is checking out his prospects.

Aaron Parker has already accomplished some impressive feats in his short career. About three years ago, Parker made the switch from hockey to football and fell in love with the sport instantly.

He plays for the Tier 1 Bev Facey Falcons and has won a bantam championship with the Fort Saskatchewan Falcons. Most recently, Parker was voted as the defensive player of the game at the gold medal game at the Canada Cup held in Kelowna, British Columbia.

Fort Saskatchewan Eyecare burglary results in charges being laid

Charges have been laid following a break-and-enter to a Fort Saskatchewan eye clinic.

On Monday (Aug. 15), RCMP responded early in the morning to a break-and-enter in progress at Fort Saskatchewan Eyecare (101 Street and 86 Avenue).

Three suspects were caught on camera filling bags with glasses and then leaving out the back door into an early model import-style SUV. Approximately $50,000 worth of designer eyewear was stolen.

Fort Saskatchewan Chamber executive director Tamara Dabels steps down

Tamara Dabels is leaving the Fort Saskatchewan & District Chamber of Commerce.

For the last five years, the chamber’s executive director has helped Fort Saskatchewan’s business community adapt, and navigate various regional changes and challenges.

Dabels will move on at the end of this month -- she accepted a position as branch manager of ATB Financial in Lamont.

80 years after Dieppe, postcards share stories of soldiers who died in deadly raid

Paris Eakins was 26 years old when he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in November 1940 during the Second World War.

He was born in Minnedosa, Man., where he lived until he attended the University of Manitoba, graduating with a bachelor of arts degree. Eakins worked at his town's newspaper and went on to join the sports department at the Winnipeg Free Press. 

After he enlisted, Eakins worked his way to become a pilot officer in a fighter squadron based in England in 1941. The next year, he was killed in northern France during the disastrous Dieppe Raid. He was 27. 

Canola Council of Canada unveils new program offering financial support to help growers initiate or advance 4R Nutrient Stewardship

The Canola Council of Canada (CCC) has unveiled a new program offering financial support to help growers initiate or advance 4R Nutrient Stewardship on canola acres.
 
The program, named Canola 4R Advantage, will reimburse growers for up to 85 per cent of eligible costs, up to $12,000 per farm per year. Funding for Canola 4R Advantage has been provided by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada through the Agricultural Climate Solutions – On-Farm Climate Action Fund (OFCAF).
