Federal government invests in youth organizations

On Monday, Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, announced an investment of up to $2.1 million for three organizations to support development opportunities for Canadian youth in agriculture.

"Canadian youth are the future of our sector. These three projects provide our next generation of farmers with opportunities to learn and develop their leadership skills. As they move toward their full potential, they are supporting the vitality of agriculture for future generations to come," said Bibeau.

'We can do better': Families urge national autism strategy as report finds care gaps

The push for Canada to develop a national autism strategy takes another leap forward with the release of a report Tuesday that outlines structural and systemic gaps facing Autistic people and their families.

The 400-page report, "Autism in Canada: Considerations for future public policy development," draws upon the lived experiences of those with autism as well as research to build the case for measures that extend beyond health services to touch on economic, educational and social policies.

Construction at G3's new facilities are on track

Work continues on G3's new state-of-the-art grain terminals at Melfort (Saskatchewan) and Rycroft (Alberta).

Corporate Communications Specialist Peter Chura says the grain facilities will be similar to their other sites on the Prairies.

The facilities will have a capacity of 42,000 tonnes, with a loop track design that allows the train to come right in off the mainline and keep it moving around the track.

RCMP recovers body from North Saskatchewan River

An upsetting discovery was made in the North Saskatchewan River.

On Saturday (May 7), a vehicle was found abandoned by the Fort Saskatchewan RCMP. A body was later found in the North Saskatchewan River, at around 1:30 p.m. Police say these incidents are connected.

The body was recovered near the Vinca Bridge, south of Redwater. The Redwater RCMP and Strathcona County RCMP, with help from fire services, did the retrieval.

Police say the death is non-suspicious.

Following an investigation, the person has been identified and the next-of-kin notified.

Alberta sees over 200 motorcycle collisions in 2021, RCMP promotes safety as season begins again

Now that the snow's gone, the motorcycles are taking back to the streets once again.

Alberta had over 200 collisions involving motorcycles last year, with 20 in May alone. The Alberta RCMP has a few tips to help reduce motorcycle collisions for 2022.

These tips include wearing proper riding equipment, performing a pre-ride check on your motorcycle, staying in sight of surrounding vehicles, and keeping a moderate distance from other drivers.

Former Sherwood Park Crusaders chosen for World Hockey Championship roster

Two Sherwood Park Crusader alumni are competing on the international level.

Matt Tomkins and Nick Holden were picked to join Team Canada at the 2022 IIHF World Championships in Finland. Holden currently plays for the Ottawa Senators and Tomkins plays for the Frölunda HC in Sweden. He was also on Team Canada at the 2022 Olympics.

There were 24 players chosen in total. Holden will be playing defense and Tomkins is one of three goalies on the team.

Since 1931, Canada has won the world championship 27 times.

My family didn’t travel much when I was a kid, but when we did, my parents jumped through hoops to cut costs.

On a trip to Disney World, for example, our family of six switched hotels. Every. Night. My mom worked for a hotel chain and could get one free night per property.

Area schools expanding junior high athletics program

More schools are going to be able to participate in the junior high athletic scene for Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS), Elk Island Catholic Schools (EICS) and New Horizons School.

Starting in the fall, they are going to expand their league from its current 16-member schools to 22-member schools. The schools will compete in seven sports including cross country running, volleyball, basketball, team handball, badminton, golf, and track and field.

Some cities will not halve child-care fees by end of year, study finds

The federal government’s highly touted national child-care program aims to make care more affordable for parents, but a new study suggests just how much fees are reduced will depend on where they live. 

The study by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives says because provinces and territories are taking different approaches to try to meet the government’s initial fee reduction targets, some might miss them.
