Rangers see split success during Mac's Invitational Tournament
The Fort Saskatchewan U18 AAA Rangers are heading home following split success at the Mac's Tournament.
Originally scheduled from Dec. 27 to Jan. 2 in Calgary, the prestigious invite-only tournament was postponed after a surge in COVID-19 cases. The Rangers were one of 24 teams selected to compete from across Canada and the United States.
Sherwood Park home burns down in fire
A house in Sherwood Park burned down over the weekend.
Just after 4 p.m. on Sunday (Apr. 10), Strathcona County Emergency Services got a 911 call from a house in the Belvedere Heights rural subdivision. A fire had started in the attic of the home and was spreading.
By the time crews arrived, the house was completely engulfed in flames. Everyone got out safely, so firefighters didn't send any of their members inside and attacked the blaze from outside.
Morinville RCMP looking for two suspects after theft
Police are looking for a pair of suspects.
On Mar. 14, sometime between 12:40 a.m. and 5 a.m., there was a theft at Wolf Creek Building Supplies in Morinville. Police say two suspects entered the secured compound and stole a truck with supplies in the back.
Edmonton Police Services have since recovered the truck along with all of the supplies and returned it to the business owner. However, RCMP is still looking for the thieves.
The first suspect is described as a Caucasian man with an average build, wearing a black toque, black pants and a black hoodie.
Canada takes aim at Russian defence sector with new sanctions over attack on Ukraine
Canada is targeting Russia's defence industry with its latest round of sanctions over Moscow's invasion of neighbouring Ukraine.
Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly says the new measures impose restrictions on 33 entities in the Russian defence sector.
She says the organizations have provided support to the Russian military — directly or indirectly — and are therefore complicit in the pain and suffering stemming from Vladimir Putin's unjustifiable war in Ukraine.
Chiefs take silver in senior AA provincials
Fort Saskatchewan's senior AA Chiefs finished second in provincials.
The Chiefs, who hosted the four-team tournament, lost the gold medal game to the Lacombe Generals, 3-2 in overtime.
"It hurts. That's hockey, it hurts. You're going into sudden death and that's why they call it sudden death, when it happens you're going to be elated or down in the dumps," said Chiefs' president and head coach, Scott Chartrand.
Fire burning outside Fort Saskatchewan
A grass fire was burning outside of Lamoureux.
Saturday evening (Apr. 9), fire crews responded to a blaze coming from the west side of the North Saskatchewan River.
Smoke from the fire blew over Fort Saskatchewan.
There's been no word on a cause.

Here's who made the cut for this year's Alberta Cup
Several local hockey players have been selected to compete in the Alberta Cup.
Sixteen players from across the heartland are heading to Red Deer later this month to participate in the Alberta Cup, which features the top 2007-born male athletes from across the province.
The tournament aims at identifying and selecting potential players for Hockey Alberta's Team Alberta program. Many players will also be chosen in the upcoming 2022 Western Hockey League Prospects Draft.
Climate change key focus of 2022 budget
Climate change was a key focus of the federal Liberal government's 2022 budget tabled on Apr. 7.
The federal government proposes to provide a further $329.4 million over six years which will triple the size of the Agricultural Clean Technology Program.
Budget 2022 also proposes to provide $469.5 million over six years to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada to expand the Agricultural Climate Solutions Program’s On-Farm Climate Action Fund.
Semi-truck fire in Sherwood Park
Strathcona County Emergency Services were called to an incident in Sherwood Park.
Firefighters responded to a semi-truck on fire Friday morning (Apr. 8) near Chippewa Road and Athabascan Avenue.
The fire was contained to just the cab and didn't spread to what the truck was moving. Crews were able to put the fire out quickly, and traffic is allowed to pass through the area.
No one was injured. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
