7 kids activities this spring break from the City of Fort Saskatchewan

Between bring-your-own Nerf gun wars, obstacle course challenges and youth and public swims, the City of Fort Saskatchewan promises there will be no shortage of activities for you and your family this spring break.

From Friday (Mar. 25) until Apr. 1, Harbour Pool and the Dow Centennial Centre will host a number of drop-in activities throughout the day.

A local running group is trying to share its passion with the community.

The Fort Sask Runners evolved from the running clinics held at the Dow Centennial Centre (DCC). Members of the clinics formed a Facebook group together and then started connecting with other runners in the community.

During the pandemic, the group would often meet up and do social distance runs together. There is a core group that participates and organizes most of these, but they always welcomed other runners to join.

Firefighters concerned about high number of river rescues this spring

There has been an increase in river rescues on the North Saskatchewan River.

In the last week, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services has responded to six calls for either children playing on the river ice or people going onto the ice to try and rescue animals.

"That is six calls too many, six preventable calls," said chief of special operations, Bruce McWhinnie. "At this time of year, with the ice shelves shifting and moving currents, the river is not safe."

Fort Saskatchewan to host U15 AAA provincial championships

It's going to be a big weekend in Fort Saskatchewan.

Fort Saskatchewan will welcome five U15 AAA teams for the 2022 Hockey Alberta U15 AAA Provincial Championships at the JRC. The tournament starts Thursday (Mar.24) and ends on Sunday.

The five teams will compete in a tournament-style format to determine the 2022 U15 AAA Provincial Champion. The first three days will be a round-robin with the bronze and gold medal games held on the final day. The bronze medal match will occur at 10 a.m., and the top teams will play for gold at 1 p.m.

Canadian troops ordered to stay away as foreign fighters flock to Ukraine

Members of the Canadian Armed Forces have been banned from joining the thousands of foreigners who have flocked to Ukraine in recent weeks to help fight Russia’s invasion.

Vice-chief of the defence staff Lt.-Gen. Frances Allen told the House of Commons defence committee on Wednesday that the order came from Gen. Wayne Eyre, chief of the defence staff and it applies to both full-time service members and part-time reservists.

Second place for Fort Sask Rangers in AEHL finals after falling to Calgary

It was a hard fought few games in the Alberta Elite Hockey League (AEHL) finals.

The Fort Saskatchewan U18 AAA Straightline Dodge Rangers were playing the Calgary Buffaloes in a best-of-five series. 

Calgary won the first two games in the series before going into game three on Wednesday (Mar. 23) at the JRC.

The Buffaloes managed to put two between the pipes during the first and second periods. Brett Boucher got Fort Saskatchewan's first goal early in the third but Calgary scored again shortly after.
